Notizie

Curriculum

Giulia Simonetti is Assistant Professor (RTDA) in Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry of Sapienza University of Rome since 2022. She obtained her B.Sc. degree in Chemistry in 2012, her M.Sc. degree in Analytical Chemistry with honors in 2014, and her Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences in 2017, all from Sapienza University of Rome. In 2023, she obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Associate Professor in Analytical Chemistry (03/A1).

During her Ph.D., she spent a research period at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, USA) as Visiting Research Scholar, working on the development and field evaluation of online monitoring systems for near-continuous measurements of metals in airborne particulate matter.

Her research activity focuses on environmental analytical chemistry, atmospheric particulate matter, emerging pollutants, micro- and nanoplastics, PFAS, bioaerosols, oxidative potential of PM, and sustainable remediation technologies. Her work combines advanced analytical methodologies with environmental and occupational exposure assessment to support pollution prevention strategies and public health policies.

She has been Principal Investigator and scientific coordinator of several competitive research projects funded by Sapienza University of Rome and national programs, including:

PRIN2022 “BIotechnologies for SUstainable REmediation – BISURE”;
“Micro and nanoplastics in the environment: adsorption capacity of hazardous pollutants and impact on aquatic microorganisms”;
“MONITORING POP – MONITORaggio di INquinanti orGanici Persistenti tOssici nel materiale particolato atmosferico”;
“Evaluation of the oxidative potential of atmospheric particulate sampled in workplaces characterized by high bioaerosol content”;
“Innovative Green Strategies for PCB Remediation: Biosurfactant-Driven Mobilization and Biodegradation”.

She has also participated in several national and international research projects funded by INAIL, LIFE, ENI, Hera Group, CNR and European collaborative networks, dealing with atmospheric pollution, occupational exposure, waste recycling facilities, bioaerosols, PFAS remediation, and airborne microplastics.

Her teaching activity includes courses and seminars in advanced analytical methodologies, chromatography, atomic spectroscopy, environmental analytical chemistry, and forensic analytical techniques within Bachelor’s, Master’s and postgraduate programs at Sapienza University of Rome. She is supervisor of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. students.

Her expertise includes:

monitoring campaigns for atmospheric pollutants;
high time-resolution aerosol sampling;
ICP-MS, ICP-OES, IC, HPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS and advanced chromatographic techniques;
analysis of organic and inorganic contaminants in environmental matrices;
extraction and characterization of microplastics and polymer additives;
PFAS analysis and remediation technologies;
chemometric and multivariate statistical analysis.

She serves as Editorial Board Member of Current Analytical Chemistry and Guest Editor for several international journals, including Atmosphere, Foods, Applied Sciences and IJERPH. Since 2025, she has been member of the Outreach Commission of the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences at Sapienza University of Rome.

Dr. Simonetti is author of more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international journals. Her current bibliometric indicators include an H-index of 18 and more than 1,000 citations (Scopus).
