RESEARCH
Research interests and National and international research projects (selected)
Since 1997, he is member of the scientific coordination of several national and international, MIUR (PRIN - National Interest Research Programme), CNR researches and Researches contracts.
In recent years, his scientific activities have been focusing on:
1) The study, including interdisciplinary studies, of the relationships between urban practices and design, the relationship between urban planning and everyday life, the overall processes of formation and evolution of the city, the suburbs and urban policies in areas of urban expansion, and the relationship between processes of reappropriation and the sense of place. More recently, she has focused on the relationship between large-scale processes (settlement, territorial, socioeconomic, financial, structural, etc.) of urban transformation, urban policies and living conditions, housing policies, integral local development, and new forms of politics. This research has had as its backdrop and objective the critical rethinking of design and policy-making processes, so that they can better consider urban practices and living conditions in everyday life. This line of research has also been developed through interdisciplinary action research, with reference to various Roman contexts, from the Monti district in the historic center to neighborhoods such as Tor Bella Monaca and Quarticciolo in the suburbs. This research path is also deeply connected to third mission and public engagement activities and involves the Urban Studies Laboratory (LabSU) “Territori dell’abitare”

He has promoted (since 2010) and developed together with other professors, researchers and scholars of other disciplines (anthropology, sociology, geography, etc.) and other universities (Ferrara, IUAV Venice, Padua, Polytechnic of Milan, etc.) the interdisciplinary research network Tracce Urbane, which among other things annually holds a national conference on the most advanced research topics in urban studies.
Research activities in this field have also been supported by research agreements and Third Mission activities.
Member of several international networks and research agreements.
2) The study and experimentation, including through action research, of participatory design processes (closely connected to the previous research line). The underlying theme of this cultural and research path was the reconsideration of urban and regional planning processes as complex social processes (not just institutional) and as an expression of collective meaning-making. The research also focused on themes such as: design as a form of collective learning, the role and meaning of action, new forms of politics and the political nature of design interaction processes, action-design as a widespread social practice in plural contexts, forms of self-organization, neighborhood workshops, and civic centers. This research path also led to a critical rereading of the participatory processes themselves. This research path is also deeply connected to third mission and public engagement activities and has benefited from numerous experiments.

This line of research builds on previous research paths related to the themes of self-sustainable local development and environmental planning.
