Hygiene: Definitions and objectives. Health and Illness. Definitions. Main indicators of the state of health of the population. Health determinants: biological, behavioral, environmental and health factors

Sterilization and disinfection: definition and objectives. Definition of sterile medical device. Classification of medical devices based on the risk of infection in the patient. Critical, semi-critical and non-sterilization articles: physical and chemical methods. Sterilization by dry heat and wet heat. Sterilization by ethylene oxide. Sterilization by ultraviolet radiation and gamma radiation. Sterilization by filtration. Disinfection. Disinfection of high, medium and low level. Requirements for a disinfectant. Factors that influence the activity of disinfectants.
Continuous, periodic and terminal disinfection. Handwashing: simple, antiseptic and surgical.

Environmental hygiene: air, water, food and their eeffects on health condition
Air pollution. Thermal inversion. Natural and anthropogenic pollutants. Air pollution sources. Major air pollutants: benzene, absesto, particulate matter. Effects of air pollution on humans and on the environment: greenhouse effect, global warming, acid rain, ozone thinning/hole.

Water for human consumption: legislative decree n. 31 of 2 February 2001. Potability and quality parameters. Physical, chemical and microbiological parameters of drinking water. Improving water quality-purification of drinking water. Primary and secondary disinfection.
Water in the hospital. Legionella risk in the hospital: assisted breathing systems, sanitary water systems and air treatment units. Dialysis water. Dialysis water production plant. Microbiological controls of a dialysis water. Reference standards for the quality of a dialysis water.

Chemical-physical and microbiological contamination of food. Primary and secondary contamination of foods. Infectious diseases transmitted by food. Intoxications and Toxininfections. Hazard-Analysis-Critical-Control-Points.
