The objective of the module is to allow the professional nurse to acquire skills in the field of mental health and specifically in the discipline of psychiatry.
This is so that he can be an active member of a multidisciplinary team work with doctors, psychologists, social workers, etc., currently an elective approach to the treatment of mental distress within the Mental Health Departments of the NHS and at an international level.

At the end of the course students will have:

- Knowledge of psychopathological principles and psychiatric semiotics.
- Knowledge of the main psychiatric diagnostic categories.
- Basic skills in the psychopharmacological field, in particular in treatments in which the intervention of the nurse is central.
- Knowledge of the main laws regulating mental health treatment in Italy.
- Knowledge of principles on the use of substances and related addictions.
- Knowledge of anger, aggression and conflict management strategies in acute patients, with particular reference to de-escalation.


Module:
The Course aims to develop relational skills necessary to assist people with mental health problems of a social-health nature regarding care situations found in hospital and extra-hospital settings.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
• Know the Department of Mental Health (DSM), its structure and the organization of the services that compose it.
• Understand the reception in the different care contexts and empathy as a fundamental concept in psychiatric practice.
• Use effective communication: the helping relationship, active listening.
• Recognize the needs of the person assisted and use the specific professional skills and abilities aimed at identifying situations of distress in order to activate suitable therapeutic-preventive interventions.
• Establish and maintain a helping relationship with the person assisted, with their family members and with the network to which they belong.
• Work in a multi-professional team: the characteristics of the team, the strength of decisions in difficult cases, the alliance with the patient and with the reference Service.
• Operate concretely in places where care-rehabilitation paths are implemented: theoretical discussion and comparison within the reference team.
• Use your professional knowledge to provide safe and evidence-based care (EBN) to assist the person with psychiatric discomfort or problem.
• Develop nursing skills aimed at identifying the main care problems found in the patient affected by mental illness. Stigma and response to treatment.
• Identify the skills and responsibilities of the nurse in the implementation of a care and network project, for the inclusion of the user in different care contexts: DSM services, private clinics, home, etc.
• Define the main consequences of mental illness in the family and life context of patients.

Course duration
The course will take place in the second semester of the academic year 2024/2025 in 8 lessons lasting 3 hours each at the “George Eastman Hospital”
Teaching methods
Lectures, demonstration, tutorial approach, discussion, group learning, problem solving, brainstorming.
Method of assessment of learning
The exam will take place in the following form:
Written - preparation of a short essay carried out in a group (three/four students; 10 pages per student) and presentation of the work through the preparation of slides (5 slides per student).
Oral - will focus on the concepts and topics presented, in line with the program covered in class.

1. Notes on the history of Psychiatry.
2. Notes on neuroscience, neuro-physiopathological bases related to mental disorders.
3. Phenomenological and descriptive Psychiatric and psychopathological semiotics.
4. DSM -5 TR classification of the following psychopathological conditions:
a. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders and other psychotic disorders.
b. Bipolar disorders and related disorders.
c. Depressive disorders.
d. Anxiety disorders.
And. Obsessive-compulsive disorder and related disorders.
f. Substance-related disorders and addiction disorders.
g. Personality disorders.
5. Treatment Principles:
to. Psychopharmacology: neuroleptics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilizing drugs. Side effects of particular nursing interest. Use of long-acting drugs and role of nursing function with them.
b. Physical therapies: Trans-cranial magnetic stimulation and electroshock.
c. Integrated approaches: Multifamily Psychoanalysis Groups and Open Dialogue.
6. Psychopathology of substance use disorders and behaviors. Dual Disorder. How dependency services work.
7. Suicide Risk Assessment.
8. Management of the patient in psychopathological acute cases in the Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment Services (SPDC) and in the Emergency Department. Use of De-Escalation techniques.
9. Principles of Italian legislation in the treatment of patients with psychiatric pathologies: Law 180/78, Compulsory Health Treatment (TSO), Compulsory Health Assessment (ASO).
