Module: Technical sciences of laboratory medicine
Understanding the role of genomic, protein, and metabolic biomarkers in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. Acquiring knowledge of the structure and organization of the clinical pathology laboratory, including workflow, safety, and the management of biological samples. Understanding the types of laboratory tests, the methods of requesting them, and the importance of correct collection, treatment, and storage of biological materials. Knowing the analytical characteristics of a laboratory assay (accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, etc.).

Module: Pathology and pathophysiology

1. Knowledge and Understanding
The student must:
- Understand the classification of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa) and the structural and functional characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
- Comprehend the general organization, morphology, and physiology of bacteria, including the role and function of bacterial spores.
- Understand the pathogenic action of bacteria, including virulence factors and toxins.
- Know the morphology and reproduction of fungi.
- Comprehend the structure, composition, replication, assembly, and release mechanisms of viral particles.
- Understand the distinction between exogenous and endogenous infections, as well as the sources and transmission routes of infections.
- Recognize the morphological characteristics and biological cycles of medically relevant parasitic protozoa and their infection strategies.
- Understand methods for controlling microorganisms, including disinfection, sterilization, and the role of vaccines in preventing microbial diseases.
- Acquire knowledge about antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, antibiograms, and antiprotozoal drugs.

2. Application of Knowledge
The student will be able to:
- Identify key microbial characteristics and correlate them with their roles in health and disease.
- Analyze infection sources and transmission pathways to propose appropriate prevention and control measures.
- Apply knowledge of disinfection and sterilization techniques in clinical settings to prevent infection.
- Evaluate the use of vaccines for disease prevention and the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapies based on antibiogram results.

3. Critical Thinking
The student must develop the ability to:
- Critically assess the risk of microbial infections in healthcare settings and identify strategies to mitigate these risks.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of different antimicrobial and disinfection methods in specific clinical contexts.
- Analyze case studies to identify the most effective infection prevention and treatment strategies.

4. Communication Skills
The student will be able to:
- Clearly communicate information about the prevention and management of microbial infections to patients and colleagues.
- Educate patients on the importance of vaccines and adherence to antimicrobial treatments.
- Provide detailed explanations regarding infection control practices to multidisciplinary teams.

5. Learning Skills
The student must:
- Develop the ability to stay updated on advances in microbiology, particularly in antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious diseases.
- Show autonomy in seeking out and interpreting scientific literature and guidelines on infection prevention and control.
- Continuously evaluate and improve their understanding of microbial behaviors and the clinical implications of microbial infections.
