The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Starting from the focus on the main educational issues related to current events, the course aims to provide a reference framework on the most relevant pedagogical guidelines from the 1900s to today. Themes such as the centrality of the pupil with respect to knowledge, the fight against early school leaving and the use of effective methodologies and languages for learning and inclusion, will be placed in relation with the thoughts of important exponents of pedagogical activism, but also with that of authors and supporters of important experiences of popular school.
In addition to reading the volumes provided for the exam, it will be proposed to view interviews, archival material and documentaries that will help to understand how educational action cannot be separated from an idea of education, school and society.

The course aims to provide theoretical frameworks which have determinated the developement of pedagogy as an autonomus branch of knowledge. This path is interrelated with social, cultural and political transformation occurred during the XX century, which have influenced the pedagogical thought. Thanks to the contributions of several authors, we will focus on theoretical fundamentals of the social pedagogy, reflecting on the chance to fight social exclusion throught its empowerment capacity.
