Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the theoretical knowledge and professional competencies required to provide nursing care in the main specialist clinical settings, integrating the nursing process with the best available scientific evidence while adhering to the principles of patient safety, appropriateness of care, quality of healthcare delivery, and patient-centered care.
Students will be able to describe the principles of nursing care in the main specialist areas, understand the essential pathophysiological mechanisms and diagnostic-therapeutic pathways of the most relevant clinical conditions, recognize the healthcare needs of patients with acute and chronic diseases, and understand the organizational, ethical, and regulatory aspects related to specialist nursing practice.
Students will also be able to apply the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions, identify early signs of clinical deterioration, contribute to the management of clinical emergencies within the scope of their professional responsibilities, and appropriately use the devices, technologies, and procedures employed in specialist clinical settings.
Students will develop the ability to critically assess patients' clinical conditions, identify priorities of care, recognize the main clinical risks, and implement strategies aimed at preventing adverse events. They will also be able to contribute effectively to multidisciplinary decision-making processes by providing nursing-specific expertise and critically evaluating the quality, effectiveness, and appropriateness of nursing interventions.
Students will acquire effective communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and caregivers, adapting their communication style to the characteristics of the individual and the clinical context. They will be able to collaborate efficiently with other healthcare professionals, promote continuity of care, and accurately document the nursing process using appropriate clinical and nursing records.
Finally, students will develop the ability to independently update their professional knowledge through the critical appraisal of scientific literature, clinical practice guidelines, and evidence-based recommendations, applying the principles of Evidence-Based Nursing to continuously improve clinical practice while fostering lifelong learning and a commitment to quality improvement and patient safety.

Prerequisites

To successfully attend this course, students are expected to possess the knowledge and competencies acquired through the foundational and core courses of the Degree Programme, particularly in anatomy, physiology, general pathology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology, general and clinical nursing, and the principles of the nursing process. Students are also expected to be familiar with the main nursing procedures, infection prevention and control measures, patient safety principles, and the fundamentals of Evidence-Based Practice. Successful completion of the learning objectives established by the curriculum up to the year in which this course is delivered is considered a prerequisite.

Programme

The course addresses the principles of nursing care in the main specialist clinical settings, with particular emphasis on integrating scientific knowledge, clinical competencies, and clinical decision-making into nursing practice. The healthcare needs of patients with acute and chronic diseases across different care settings will be examined, promoting a patient-centered approach focused on continuity of care and quality improvement.
The course covers the pathophysiological and clinical nursing aspects of the most relevant specialist conditions, including the care of medical and surgical patients and the management of cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, metabolic, oncological, and infectious diseases, as well as critically ill patients and the most common urgent and emergency clinical conditions. Particular attention will be given to clinical monitoring, prevention and management of complications, pain management, nutritional support, patient mobilization, and early rehabilitation.
The nursing process will be explored in depth, with emphasis on comprehensive patient assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing interventions, the use of clinical monitoring tools and validated assessment scales, nursing documentation, and continuity of care throughout different healthcare pathways.
The course will also examine the principles of patient safety, prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections, clinical risk management, and the appropriate use of medical devices and healthcare technologies in specialist settings. Organizational aspects of nursing care, multidisciplinary teamwork, communication with patients, families, and caregivers, and the ethical and professional principles underpinning nursing practice will also be discussed.
Finally, the course will introduce the principles of Evidence-Based Nursing, the critical appraisal of scientific literature, and continuous quality improvement in healthcare, fostering the development of clinical reasoning, professional autonomy, and the ability to integrate the best available evidence into everyday nursing practice.
