Objectives

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: discuss the three phases of perioperative patient management; discuss the impact of surgery on health and function; identify some life course considerations for patients undergoing surgery; describe appropriate perioperative education; discuss emotional support, safety and asepsis during the intraoperative phase; identify appropriate nursing assessment on the ward and during the postoperative period; identify the most common postoperative complications and nursing interventions to promote normal function; develop an appropriate discharge plan for the surgical patient.
