AIMS

The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary guidelines for the classification of the main haematological diseases. The course also aims to make students acquire knowledge about the principles of treatment and management of the onco-haematological patient.

At the end of the course the student must be able to 1) know and describe the main haematological diseases, 2) interpret simple diagnostic reports and 3) know the principles of treatment and management of the onco-haematological patient.

SYLLABUS
Hematopoiesis. The hematopoietic stem cell and hematopoietic progenitors. (1 hour)
Diagnostic tests in hematology: peripheral blood and bone marrow. (1 hour)
Anemias: classification (2 hours)
Platelet and coagulation disorders. (1 hour)
Onco-hematology (6 hours)
Definition of neoplasia. General features of the neoplastic cell.
Integrated diagnostic pathway in onco-hematology:
 Morphological examination
 Flow cytometry
 Cytogenetics and molecular genetics
 Molecular investigations
Definition and classification:
 Acute myeloid and lymphoid leukemia
 Chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms
 Chronic lymphatic leukemia
 Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas,
 Monoclonal Gammopathies and Multiple Myeloma

Stem cell transplantation: autologous and allogeneic. (1 hour)
