Objectives

The student must demonstrate an understanding of the etiopathogenetic mechanisms, the development of diseases (etiology) and how they alter normal physiological functions (pathogenesis). This includes learning the cellular, molecular and systemic processes involved.

Learning outcomes

Module:
N/D
Module:

Module:
N/D

Prerequisites

The student must know structures and functions of the different cell types and kinds of tissues of the human body, and must know the biochemistry of the main biological macromolecules.

Programme

Module:
The student must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of pathology and of the intrinsic link between structural and functional alterations (pathology) and the consequent modifications of normal physiological processes (pathophysiology).

Module:

Role of pathologist; sample management (from processing to staining in cytology and histology)
Diseases of the female genital system: anatomy and histology of the organ; dimension of the problem in each area and histological aspects of the disease processes
Pathology of the uterine cervix (from pap smear to histology; CIN-LSIL-HSIL, carcinoma)
Pathology of the uterine body (endometriosis, adenomyosis, glandular hyperplasia, endometrial carcinoma, leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma)
Benign ovarian pathology (folliculogenesis, benign cysts, ovarian tumors: of the epithelium, of the sexual cords and stroma, of the germinative epithelium, metastatic neoplasms)
Placental pathology (insertion anomalies, chorioamniositis, placental infarction, cord insertion anomalies, trophoblast diseases: mola, choriocarcinoma)
Benign and malignant breast disease
Pathology of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus: GERD, esophagitis and neoplasms; stomach: gastritis, carcinomas; colon: polyps and carcinomas)
Cardiovascular pathology(hypertrophy, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction)
Respiratory diseases (emphysema, acute pulmonary edema, neoplasms)

Module:
General characteristics, structure and virulence of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa).
Overview of the main antimicrobial drugs.
Host-parasite relationships. Definition of infection and infectious disease. Pathogenesis of infections.
Overview of immunology: host defense mechanisms. Immunoprophylaxis.
Nosocomial infections.
Urinary tract infections.
Infections of the genital apparatus and sexually transmitted diseases.
Infection of the fetus and the newborn.
Basic techniques of antisepsis, disinfection and sterilization.
Principles of microbiological diagnostics. Method of collection, transport and storage of microbiological samples.

Lessons mode

teaching activity will include lectures in classroom when this is possible, based on anti-covid 19 provisions. Alternatively, teaching activity will Frontal lessons with audio-visual and multimedia supports

Frequency

Students must achieve the minimum number of hours provided

Exam mode

The student acquired knowledge will be evaluated through an ongoing exam in Google meet, zoom or in presence, depending on the Covid 19 status
