Learning outcomes

Module:

Main teaching objectives:
By the end of the course, the student must know the structural organization and functions of the human body and their main anatomical and clinical applications at macroscopic, microscopic and ultrastructural level, connecting the structural organization and corresponding functions in a midwife practice perspective.

At the end of the course the student should know the morpho-functional aspects of adult tissues

Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics.

Necessary pre-requisites: high-school level knowledge of Physics, inorganic and organic Chemistry. Useful prerequisites: elements of Cell Biology.

Homeostasis: Examples of negative and positive feedbacks; thermoregulation.
Integration, Regulation, Control: Introduction to Sensory, Motor and Autonomic Nervous System.
Neuromuscular junction. Membrane action and resting potentials. Skeletal Muscle and Motor Unit. Strength generators. Spatial and time recruitment. Isometric and isotonic contraction.
The Cardiovascular System: Overview
 Circulation goal and cardiovascular system's plan: Fick's Principle and the relationship between oxygen consumption and cardiac output

Systematic Anatomy
1) General anatomical features of the human body: Terminology, systems, organs.
2) Osteology, Syndesmology and Myology: Gross anatomy of skeleton, joints and muscles.
3) Angiology: Gross and microscopic anatomy of the vascular system, comprising the heart, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, lymph glands and hemopoietic organs.
4) Splanchnology: Gross and microscopic anatomy of the visceral system, including the digestive apparatus, the respiratory apparatus, the urinary apparatus, the female and male reproductive apparatuses and the endocrine glands.
5) Neuroanatomy: Functional anatomy of the nervous system, including notes on the gross and microscopic anatomy of the sensory organs.
6) Notes on the anatomical structure of the skin and its appendages.

Histological techniques: overview of methods in cytology and histology; tissue preparation for microscopic examination; light and electronic instruments for studying cells and tissues. Basics of histochemistry and immuno-histochemistry. Cell integration. Differentiation. Notion of tissue, organ and system. Tissue renewal; stem cells and cell lineage kinetics. Epithelial tissue. Specializations of cells surface and cell polarity. Lining epithelia. Glands. Connective Tissues. General structure and functions of connective tissue. Connective tissue proper: extracellular matrix, fibers, ground substance and cells. Cartilage: types of cartilage; chondrogenesis and cartilage growth. Bone: bone architecture and functions. Lectures will be supplemented with practical tutorials and electives. Lectures will be supported by slides. The topics will be treated according to the professional needs of the students.

About 12 lectures of 2 hours each.

Compulsory attendance (minimum attendance required to be admitted to the exam: 67%).

Oral examination with commission of Integrated Courses gathered together


Module:
The evaluation of the course includes an oral exam.
The following elements will be taken into consideration: the ability to reason and self-study and specific preparation (70%); attendance and active involvement (30%). The intermediate test will be scheduled soon after one-half of the course.
The final evaluation will be elaborated and expressed in thirtieths.



Module:
A written test in Histology (multi-choice questions) will be scheduled at the end of the course. Who will get a minimum of 18/30 grade, does not need to make the oral exam in Histology. Who will not pass or make the written test, should pass an oral exam in Histology first, to be able to conclude the entire exam.
