Learning outcomes

Module:
N/D
Module:
At the end of the course the student should be able to know and describe the classifications of the main neoplastic and non-neoplastic alterations of the cervix, uterus and ovary; describe the main placental and umbilical cord anomalies.
Describe the clinical and histological characteristics of the main pathologies of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and respiratory systems.

Module:
N/D

Prerequisites

Module:
The student must know structures and functions of the different cell types and kinds of tissues of the human body, and must know the biochemistry of the main biological macromolecules.

Module:
In order to understand the teaching content and to achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the didactic activities foreseen by the didactic module the student must possess the knowledge of anatomy of the anatomy of the main organs of the body.

Module:
Basic notions of biology

Programme

Module:
Etiology: Main concepts of health, pathologic process and disease; etiology, pathogenesis, evolution, resolution (exitus). General environmental pathology. Pathology by physical and chemical agents. Biological agents of disease: bacterial exotoxins and endotoxins.
Pathology of cell structures: the cell's response to injury: cellular stress, cellular adaptations (hypertrophy, hyperplasia, atrophy, metaplasia), intracellular storage diseases
The basics of inflammation, acute and chronic inflammation. Innate immunity and inflammation. Inflammation as a transcriptional program. Inflammatory cells. Chemical mediators of inflammation of cellular and plasma origins. Acute inflammation: the vascular phenomena of inflammation, the mechanisms of formation of exudate, the various types of exudative inflammation. Chronic inflammation: mechanisms of granuloma formation.
Oncology: Cell/Tissue phenotypic changes: metaplasia, dysplasia, anaplasia and precancerous lesions. Definition of cancer. Morphological and biochemical features of the neoplastic cell. Histogenetic classification of tumors. Clinical criteria for the classification of tumors: grading and staging. Stages of the neoplastic process: initiation, promotion and progression (invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis). Oncogenes and their activation mechanisms. Tumor suppressor genes. Genomic instability. Heredityary tumors.

Module:

Role of pathologist; sample management (from processing to staining in cytology and histology)
Diseases of the female genital system: anatomy and histology of the organ; dimension of the problem in each area and histological aspects of the disease processes
Pathology of the uterine cervix (from pap smear to histology; CIN-LSIL-HSIL, carcinoma)
Pathology of the uterine body (endometriosis, adenomyosis, glandular hyperplasia, endometrial carcinoma, leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma)
Benign ovarian pathology (folliculogenesis, benign cysts, ovarian tumors: of the epithelium, of the sexual cords and stroma, of the germinative epithelium, metastatic neoplasms)
Placental pathology (insertion anomalies, chorioamniositis, placental infarction, cord insertion anomalies, trophoblast diseases: mola, choriocarcinoma)
Benign and malignant breast disease
Pathology of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus: GERD, esophagitis and neoplasms; stomach: gastritis, carcinomas; colon: polyps and carcinomas)
