Objectives
Knowledge of the main psychiatric diseases and of the psychopathology. This phenomenal knowledge of the symptom leads to a discernment of the individual clinical picture. Knowledge of the experiences in pregnancy and intra-family dynamics.
Learning outcomes
Module:
General outcomes: Understanding communication methods, active listening, establishing empathetic relationships, the effects of breastfeeding and ways to promote it. Facilitating mother-infant attachment. Understanding stress, the systems involved, and the main issues related to stress, as well as ways to manage it. Understanding burnout, its defining processes, and protective factors. Understanding depressive symptomatology, with particular reference to the postpartum period and risk factors, and aspects related to body image during the postpartum period.
Upon completion of the course, it is expected that students will have achieved the following learning outcomes (Dublin descriptors):
I. Knowledge and understanding: Students should be able to know and understand the causes of stress, the activation of various systems involved (physiological, neuroendocrine, etc.), psychological mechanisms for evaluating potentially threatening situations, major anxiety and depressive disorders, measurement tools for assessing postpartum depression, body image, and risk factors for pathology and health behaviors (e.g., breastfeeding).
II. Application of knowledge and understanding: Applying knowledge and understanding of various aspects discussed within the midwifery relationship. Understanding when to seek the intervention of a mental health professional.
III. Autonomy of judgment: Students should be able to critically evaluate the knowledge acquired.
IV. Communicative skills: Students should be able to use appropriate language and terminology.
V. Learning skills: Students will have the knowledge to continue learning independently for continuous updating. They will be able to draw from various Italian and English bibliographic sources and evaluate their relevance.
Module:
Learning outcomes: In order to achieve good clinical skills proficiency in psychiatry, the course aims to provide basic information on principles of global mental health, of psychopathology, and of mental disorders and their epidemiology, clinical features, detection, diagnosis and treatment in the community and in hospital.
At the end of the course the student must: a) know the global and individual impact of mental disorders; b) recognize main signs and symptoms of mental disorders; c) know epidemiology, clinical characteristics and course, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria of mental disorders; d) to recognize common consciousness disorder with their differential diagnosis in medicine e) know the treatment of acute and long-term pharmacological and psychosocial treatment of mental disorders; d) know basic forensic aspects of psychiatry and compulsory treatment of mental disorders.

The course aims to provide an understanding of the psychological aspects of pregnancy , early motherhood and puerperium, with reference to scientific evidence and the latest advances in the scientific literature. Also it aims to provide measurement tools for the prevention and the promotion of well-being during pregnancy and during the postnatal period.
Communications in midwifery practice
-Emotions during pregnancy, labour and puerperium. Motherhood and fatherhood, changes in the body and body image. Measurement tools.
-Perinatal distress: stress, anxiety, baby blues and postnatal depressive illness
-Coping strategies, self-efficacy during pregnancy and puerperium
-Relaxation techniques
-Midwife’s role in supporting parent-baby relationships and attachment
-Breastfeeding: information, beliefs, attitudes and satisfaction. Measurement tools

Verification of proposed knowledge. During the final exam the theoretical knowledge will be evaluated, evaluating the student's ability to recognize and recall concepts and models differentiating them from each other.
Number of tests and timing: The exam will consist of a final assessment of the knowledge and skills ac-quired. This will be scheduled at the end of the course during the exam sessions.
Type, duration and method of the exam: Written test lasting 20 minutes consisting of closed and open ques-tions on the teaching materials delivered in class. According to the teacher, the written test can be accompa-nied by an oral exam.
Number and period of exam sessions: The exam will take place in all scheduled sessions. Dates are determined by the faculty manager
