Objectives

Know the pathologies of pregnancy and childbirth, of the full-term and premature newborn and the neuro-behavioral evaluation protocols. Acquire the treatment methodologies and the techniques of rehabilitative intervention for the newborn hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care and/or for the child at neuro-developmental risk.

Learning outcomes

Know the main neurodevelopmental risk factors in newborns and infants and their implications for development.
Understand and use assessment and prognosis tools (BNAS, ABIP, PAGMs) in early care.
Apply the principles of Heidelise Als' Synaptic Theory and the NIDCAP model in the care of newborns in the NICU.
Develop an individualised habilitative care programme for low-risk newborns and infants or those discharged from the NICU.
Implement habilitative interventions based on contact, postural and sensory regulation, and biological rhythms.
Recognise and manage regulation and feeding disorders in newborns.
Promote parental involvement in the habilitative process, supporting parenting skills and early bonding.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of neurophysiology, neuropsychology and psychomotor development of newborns and infants.
Elements of neonatal pathology and preliminary skills in clinical observation and assessment of neonatal behaviour.
Fundamental concepts of rehabilitation intervention in childhood and ability to work in a multi-professional team.

Exam mode

Students are given a written assignment consisting of 30 quiz questions with four possible answers, only one of which is correct.

Example exam questions

According to Heidelise Als' Synaptic Theory, what principle guides habilitative intervention in preterm infants?
a) Increasing environmental stimuli to promote sensory maturation.
b) Standardising therapeutic protocols for all infants.
c) Adapting the environment and care to the individual behavioural and physiological signals of the newborn.
d) Focusing exclusively on nutritional aspects.
