Objectives

At the end of the course the student must know morpho-functional and metabolic characteristics of the prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic, the fundamentals of the genetic code and of the regulation of gene expression, of the mechanisms of inheritance e the nature of gene mutation, aspects of genetic pathology and of development, of molecular and cell pathology and of environmental pathology; acquires knowledge of the fundamentals of neoplastic transformation and inflammation, of pathogenic microorganisms for humans, of relationships between host and pathogenic organisms; the main techniques of classical microbiology and the general principles of immunology.
At the end of the course the student must demonstrate that he has acquired the critical skills and tools necessary to understand the evolutionary approach to biological phenomena; must be able to distinguish the main genetic diseases; be able to distinguish genetic and developmental pathologies, molecular, cellular, environmental, neoplastic and inflammatory pathologies; be able to recognize the morphological, structural and genetic characteristics of microorganisms and their pathogenicity, to understand the mechanisms of action of the main antibacterial and antiviral drugs and be able to distinguish the prevention tools such as vaccines.

Aim of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to understand the mechanisms by which the causes of disease act on the human organism and the main consequences of such actions, in particular, the general etiology, cell damage, inflammation, the healing of tissues, the biology of the neoplastic cell as well as the pathophysiology of the main organs/apparatus.

As a result, the expected learning outcomes predict that the student will acquire the ability to describe many of the basic pathological processes, learn an adequate nomenclature, understand the meaning of pathological processes and their interactions. The student will also acquire the knowledge of the principles underlying the alteration of the physiology of the main organs/ apparatus.

In order to understand the course and to achieve the learning objectives, students must have a basic knowledge of chemistry, as acquired in the high school. In particular, students should be familiar with the atomic structure, the periodic table of the elements, the properties of the elements and the chemical bonding.

Chemical, physical and biological agents as cause of disease. Biological effects of ionizing and exciting radiations. Electricity, heat and cold as cause of disease.

Genetic pathology:
Methods of analysis: genetic markers and localization of pathologic genes. Modality of transmission of hereditary dieseases. Models of human genetic diseases. Genotypic-phenotypic relations. Non-hereditary congenic diseases.

Inflammation:
Acute and chronic inflammation. Vascular phenomena, cells involved in inflammation, chemical mediators, phagocytosis, exudate, granulomes, wound healing.

Fever:
Physiopathology of thermoregulation. Endogenous and exogenous pyrogens. Types of fever.

Immunology and immunopathology:
Antigens and aptens. Antibodies: structure and function of immunoglobulins, genetic of immunoglobulins. Antigen-antibody reaction. Major histocompatibility complex: typization and function. having acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course. The Applied Biology and Genetics exam consists of an oral colloquium. The dates of the exam sessions are published on the Sapienza infostud website. At the end of the courses of Applied Biology and Genetics there is a written self evalution test followed by an oral colloquium.

The student must attend a written test and an oral interview to demonstrate he has acquired, as well as is able to explain, the main and fundamental concepts of General Pathology and Physiopathology.
The student must also acquire the knowledge of the biological defense mechanisms of the immune system, and vaccination prevention; of the etiological bases and of the pathogenetic mechanisms of the principal pathologies of man, especially of the oral cavity, of inflammatory pathologies and tumors.
At the end of the course the student must be able to distinguish genetic and developmental pathologies, molecular, cellular, environmental, neoplastic and inflammatory pathologies.
