The course provides the essential principles of general and organic chemistry required for the understanding of biological systems. Topics include the structure of matter, atomic theory, chemical bonding, the periodic table, inorganic nomenclature, stoichiometry, solutions, gases, chemical equilibrium, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, acids and bases, oxidation-reduction reactions, and basic electrochemistry. The course also introduces the main classes of organic compounds and biologically relevant molecules, including amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, with emphasis on their structure, properties, and biological functions.
