Learning Objectives:
The student must acquire a solid knowledge and understanding of the structure, metabolism, replication, and techniques for controlling bacterial growth, as well as the pathogenic mechanisms of major medically relevant bacteria and viruses. Particular attention will be devoted to understanding the interactions between microorganisms and the host, and to nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course module, the student will have acquired fundamental knowledge concerning microorganisms and their main morphological, replicative, and metabolic characteristics, their pathogenic properties, and possible interactions with the host; preventive and therapeutic approaches to infectious diseases; and in-depth understanding of hospital-acquired infections. This knowledge will enable the student to successfully approach subsequent courses in Hygiene and Infectious Diseases. The knowledge acquired in this module will also allow the student to understand the stages of the infectious process and the modes of microorganism transmission. They will be able to apply the knowledge gained in clinical contexts, particularly concerning the prevention of the spread of pathogenic microorganisms, with specific reference to healthcare-associated infections and the issue of multidrug resistance.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course module, the student will be able to apply microbiological knowledge to understand infection-related risks on a global scale and, especially, within healthcare settings. This will help in adopting behaviors that do not endanger their own health or that of patients and allow them to competently provide information and advice to patients, relatives, and caregivers about diseases caused by microorganisms.
INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
By the end of the course module, the student will be able to critically and independently discuss professional issues in the field of clinical microbiology, with particular reference to healthcare settings.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course module, the student will have acquired the ability to present content, knowledge, and findings related to clinical microbiology—and especially the prevention and management of healthcare-associated infections—using clear and appropriate language and terminology.
LEARNING SKILLS
By the end of the course module, the student should demonstrate that they have acquired the methodological tools necessary to undertake further studies independently and to expand their technical knowledge using digital tools. They should also be able to effectively use terminology, frameworks, and concepts, and refine their communication skills for effective and constructive interaction with patients.

• Introduction to microbiology discipline, presentation of microbiology milestones and the most important scientists in microbiology.
• Description of bacterial cell, differences between bacterial and eukaryotic cells, classification of bacteria: morphology, aggregation and staining. Bacterial cell structures: chromosome and regulation of bacterial gene expression (lac operon), plasmids, cytoplasm, plasma membrane, cell wall. Peptidoglycan composition, structure and biosynthesis. Differences between Gram+ and Gram- bacteria, LPS structure. Extracellular structure: capsule, s layer, slime and biofilm. Flagella and fimbrie.
• Bacterial replication. Mechanism of genetic variation: mutations and horizontal gene transfer.
• Bacterial endospores.
• Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
• Pathogenesis of bacterial infection. Nosocomial infections and prevention.
• Infectious diseases spread control: clinical and practice guidelines (good practice in hospital).
• Bacterial virulence: adherence, invasion. Bacterial virulence factors: exsoenzymes and hemolysins. Immune evasion. Bacterial toxins: cytotoxins, enterotoxins, neurotoxins, superantigens.
• Viruses: viral structure and classification, viral replication and focus on principal human pathogenic viruses and nosocomial viral infection.
