Objectives
Introduction to the fundamental concepts of Mechanics and
Thermodynamics. Successful students will be able to deal with basic
topics concerning Mechanics and Thermodynamics. They will become
proficient and acquainted with subjects such as work, energy and
conservation laws. Moreover, they will be able to face and solve
problems of Mechanics and Thermodynamics by applying the main laws of
Physics. In order to achieve these goals and to help the student to
develop the ability to communicate the acquired knowledge, while also
learning how to work autonomously, we plan to ask general and specific
questions (related to the subject) during the theoretical lectures.
During the exercise sessions, on the other hand, students will be asked
to solve selected exercises on the board.
Learning outcomes
The lectures will allow students to develop understanding and application skills, as well as autonomy of judgement, communication and comprehension skills. Particularly, they will be able of:
Knowing and to understand basics physics laws, in the fields of mechanics, fluidodynamics, calorimetry, and thermodynamics;
Applying the acquired analytical skills to solving basic Physics problems;
Knowing how to independently assess which is the physical law that explains a given phenomenon;
Knowing how to describe basic physical laws and their application;
Knowing how use appropriate terms of the mathematical/scientific language;
Knowing how to conceptually apply the scientific method in the formulation of the hypotheses to describe phenomena;
Knowing how to apply the scientific method to operationally verify formulated hypotheses.
Prerequisites
No pre-requisites about physics knowledge are required. A good knowledge of elementary algebra, trigonometry and mathematical analysis are required.
Programme
MECHANICS
Kinematics and dynamics of material point
Work and energy
Dynamics off systems
Gravitation
FLUID MECHANICS
TERMODYNAMICS
Lessons mode
Lectures and guided exercises will be carried out by the teacher. In-itinere tests are foreseen to evaluate the students.
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended to achieve the necessary knowledge required to pass the exam.
Exam mode
The exam is made of a written and an oral test. Access to the oral test is only allowed if the written test was successful. The validity of written test mark is limited to the exam session when it is taken, and it allows to access all the tests foreseen in the very same session. The validity of in-itinere tests is limited to the first exam session.
Example exam questions
Students can refer to the didactic material provided during lectures and to the suggested books (both theory and exercise).
