Learning outcomes
At the end of the lessons, the student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and the possible risks of:
a) diagnostic tests using ionizing radiation (also contrastographic and complex X-ray investigations, Computerized Tomography, Bone Densitometry, Nuclear Medicine Investigations)
b) diagnostic tests using ultrasound (Ecotomography, Ecocolordoppler)
c) diagnostic tests using magnetic fields (Magnetic Resonance)
Furthermore, by applying the knowledge and understanding acquired with this teaching and integrating it with those derived from other teachings (physics, computer science, biology, anatomy, histology, physiology), the student must be able to know:
- specify the main clinical indications for the use of the various methods (in the traumatological, malformative, degenerative, phlogistic, oncological fields)
- specify the main contraindications to the use and / or the precautions to be implemented for particular diagnostic tests, after evaluation of the risk-benefit balance, also in relation to the patient's clinical situation (emergency, urgency, acute, chronic)
- know the integrated professional role of the different medical and health figures involved in the process of diagnosis and patient care, so as to be able to understand the methods and timing of the examinations in the field of first evaluation, follow-up or interventional therapy.
Prerequisites
Basic concepts of radiation physics

Musculoskeletal system with particular attention to shoulder, elbow, wrist / hand, pelvis / hip, knee, ankle / foot
Overview of Interventional Radiology
The main clinical indications for the use of the various methods (in the traumatological, malformative, degenerative, phlogistic, oncological fields); the main contraindications to the use and / or the precautions to be carried out for particular diagnostic tests, after evaluation of the risk-benefit balance, also in relation to the patient's clinical situation (emergency, urgency, acute, chronic); integrated professional role of the different medical and health figures involved in the process of diagnosis and treatment of the patient, methods and timing of the examinations in the field of first evaluation, follow-up or interventional therapy.
Radioprotection: principles, regulations, clinical risks and radiation damage (graduated and stochastic effects); Safety in the field of medical use of ultrasound and magnetic fields; Main clinical applications of the various methods according to specific imaging protocols in the field of: Malformation; trauma; degenerative; inflammatory; oncology
Books
The materials used for the lectures will be provided during the course.
These materials serve as support and a guide for studying and preparing for the exam.
Supplementary texts for specific topics may be recommended by the professor during the course upon student request.
Bibliography
Text of the Italian State radiation protection law which will be provided in class
Lessons mode
Teaching consists of face-to-face lectures, which involve a strong interactive component between the professor and students.
Frequency
Attendance is mandatory in person, as with all Degree Courses, with a minimum attendance requirement of 67% as stipulated by the university statutes.
Exam mode
At the end of the lessons of the course there will be a check with a written exam divided into multiple choice questions (3 answers, 1 only right) and open-ended questions that will focus on the topics covered in class.
For multiple choice questions: each correct answer will have assigned the score of 1, each answer not given or wrong by 0 (zero).
For open-ended questions: each answer given will have assigned a score of at least 1, each answer not given will have a score of 0 (zero).
In case of failure to pass the written exam and / or at the request of the interested party, the student will be examined on the entire program and in a single exam session.
The overall grade of the exam consists of the arithmetic average of the tests performed.
Example exam questions
Staff Radiation Protection: What are PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment)?
Patient Radiation Protection: Controlled area and supervised area?
Who must undergo radiation protection?
