Studies in Art History

STEFANO MARCONI

Knowledge of the general lines of art history in the centuries from the fifteenth to the eighteenth.
Objective of the course: give an oriantation in the art historyknowledge, identifying the main geographical and historical coordinates, while offering in-depth knowledge of the major artists and social dynamics and interactions between them, and a knowledge of the basic methodologies related to the art history from the 15th to the 18th century.
Promote in the students an autonomous capacity to deepen the main issues related to the historical-artistic disciplines, to link them, and promote the abilities of connoisseurship in the art history field.

The course constitutes a guide to the understanding of the visual and material characteristics of the works of art also through the study of literary sources in the period considered from Leon Battista Alberti to Leonardo da Vinci.

1. Notes from lectures. The critical contributions that will constitute work and study material will be gradually indicated by the teacher and placed in a special virtual classroom. For the part concerning the linear perspective, lecture notes can be usefully integrated with the reading of: S. 2. A good hanbook for high school. It is advisable: S. SETTIS, T. MONTANARI, Arte. Una storia naturale e civile, Milano, Mondadori Education, 2019, vol. 3 (whole), vol. 4 (to p. 349, including Neoclassicism and Early Romanticism). The preparation of the institutional part on the manual must be integrated with knowledge of the following texts: J. SUMMERSON, Il linguaggio classico dell'architettura, Torino, Einaudi, 1990; La scultura raccontata da Rudolf Wittkower, Torino, Einaudi, 1993, chapters IV-X.

3. Reading of an essay of your choice in a short list that will be communicated at the beginning of the course.

Lecture with presentation in powerpoint and/or pdf.

Attendance is not mandatory, but is strongly reccomended. Students who can not follew the lessons are asked to contact the teacher in any case for explanations and suggestions.

The student must demonstrate the knowledge of artistic phenomena from Late Gothic to Neoclassicism, to know how to characterize the artistic personalities, to be able to recognize and analyze the works of different arts (architecture, painting, sculpture, applied and decorative arts).
