CATERINA VOLPI

Knowledge of the general lines of art history in the centuries from the fifteenth to the eighteenth.
Objective of the course: give an oriantation in the art historyknowledge, identifying the main geographical and historical coordinates, while offering in-depth knowledge of the major artists and social dynamics and interactions between them, and a knowledge of the basic methodologies related to the art history from the 15th to the 18th century.
Promote in the students an autonomous capacity to deepen the main issues related to the historical-artistic disciplines, to link them, and promote the abilities of connoisseurship in the art history field.

No prerequisites required

The course examines the fundamental features of Italian art history from the 14th to the 18th century: the 14th century, the courtly civilization and the international Gothic, the invention of the Renaissance in the 15th century in Florence, the diffusion of perspective in Italy, the Lorenzo the Magnificent, the mature Renaissance with Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo, Mannerism, Venice in the sixteenth century; the birth and diffusion of Caravaggio language; the classicism of Annibale Carracci and his school; the Baroque; Venetian painting of the eighteenth century; the birth of Neoclassicism in Rome. The main aspects will be deepened and dealt with according to a multidisciplinary criterion aimed at the knowledge of different historical-artistic methodologies and the learning of fundamental stylistic coordinates.

Frontal lessons. The exercises will consist of recognition tests, interactions and interventions by the students in the classroom and in guided tours with targeted interventions on individual artworks by the students (the works will be agreed in class during the course).

Strongly recommended frequency

To pass the exam you need to have sufficient knowledge of the topics developed in class, a basic knowledge of in-depth texts, to be able to recognize the main works of the most important artists. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must instead demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to connect them in a logical and coherent way and to have independently investigated some aspects taken. under examination during the lessons.
