10605330 | BOOK DESIGN AND TYPOGRAPHY STUDIO | 1st | 9 | ICAR/13, ICAR/13 | ENG
Educational objectives The Integrated Laboratory of Book Design and Typography Studio aims to provide theoretical-critical, design and technical tools to allow the student to tackle the project of complex artefacts and systems of artefacts in the field of Visual Communication based on one of its founding elements: the typography. The laboratory therefore intends to provide the tools for a conscious use of the typeface in the design of different types of artefact in the editorial field. These tools include knowledge of the anatomy of the character and the related changes in reference to historical and technological contexts; topics such as information architecture will also be explored through the correct use of typefaces, microtypography and the use of characters in an expressive key. Finally, the integrated use of typography with the other elements of graphic design will be discussed. At the end of the workshop, the student must have acquired knowledge and skills that allow the design of both a typeface and an editorial design artifact, from concept to realization, with particular attention to the printing and preparation phase of the designed product. The Laboratory consists of a "Book Design and Typography Studio" module, with a strong design component in the field of editorial design; and a module of "History of Visual Design" which aims to provide the historical and critical basis of graphic design. These skills will be verified within the project activities, through exercises, and through the final test, which will be used to verify both the progress in the production of the artifacts and the theoretical preparation starting from the reference bibliography. BOOK DESIGN AND TYPOGRAPHY STUDIO Specific objectives The course has the main objective of providing the student with specific knowledge in the field of Editorial Design, with particular attention to the design of a typeface and the use of typography in the editorial field. The course must therefore provide the methodological, technical and design tools for the design of a typeface and for the analysis and processing of projects in the field of Visual Communication. The course aims, through a theoretical and practical path, to provide students with the acquisition of cultural, theoretical and technical knowledge to properly design and use the typography tool, necessary for the conception and creation of graphic artefacts capable of combining the traditional component with contemporary elements. To achieve these objectives, notions will be provided relating to both the morphology of the font and the new technologies applied to the engineering of fonts, such as parametric variables and applications for motion graphics. At the end of the module, the student must have acquired theoretical-methodological and practical knowledge that allows the creation of projects of typefaces and artifacts and artifact systems in the context of Editorial Design. The verification of knowledge will also be carried out through the examination test and through exercises and ongoing tests.
BOOK DESIGN AND TYPOGRAPHY | 1st | 3 | ICAR/13 | ENG
Educational objectives The course has the main objective of making the student acquire specific knowledge in the field of the History of Visual Communication. The course should therefore provide the methodological tools to identify, understand and temporally place projects in the history of graphics, and specifically typefaces, posters, magazines and book covers, capturing their unique design and production aspects. The course will therefore focus on artefacts designed between 1890 and 1990, with particular attention to the Italian graphic and typographic production. These case studies will be analyzed in relation to the context in which they were designed and based on the impact they had on contemporary society. In addition to the visual aspects of artefacts, the course aims to address the technological issues related to the production of artefacts, and in particular printing techniques, with the aim of making students acquire the knowledge useful for recognizing the technical aspects of a project. During the course, some historiographical information will also be provided, useful for understanding the limits that define the discipline and the methodological innovations arising from the debate that has taken place over the last decade. Finally, issues relating to the study of primary and secondary sources will be addressed, with the aim of providing students with a first introduction to historical research. This specific objective will be verified through the drafting of a written text. The historical-critical component will instead be evaluated through an exam that certifies the mastery of the course topics.

10616103 | INFORMATION DESIGN STUDIO | 1st | 9 | SPS/08, ICAR/13 | ENG
Educational objectives Specific objectives: The module deals with providing knowledge and fostering the learning of methods and techniques for the collection, processing, interpretation and organization of data for communication purposes through the development of visual projects. The course aims to provide students with the tools to develop critical skills in approaching data through two learning modes: a frontal mode based on specific theoretical contributions (frontal lectures, involvement of external experts, in-depth bibliographical and research studies) and a practical mode based on design exercises and experimental activities. The objective of the module is, therefore, the acquisition by the students of critical and operative capacities with respect to theoretical-methodological, technical and design knowledge, their putting into practice through graphic-visual proposals that foresee the application in an effective and innovative manner of the communication tools proper to the field of representation and the development of new forms of visual language.
DATA VISUALIZATION | 1st | 3 | SPS/08 | ENG
Educational objectives Specific objectives: the module deals primarily with the critical analysis and design of visual narratives from data and information, applying narrative models from the sociological tradition, such as the circular structure of the hero's journey (Campbell, 1984) and Vogler, 1999), characterization of characters through the archetypes and fundamental psychological types of narration (Durand,1972; Jung, 1947; Pearson, 1990), as well as the firm heads of narrative, functions and structures (Barthes, 1966; Todorov,1969). Through this module, students will acquire knowledge and skills to carry out a critical analysis of visual narratives, including cross-media and transmedia narratives, and will be able to apply the rules underlying the content design of visual narratives when they have to visualize data or narrate them within an interpretative narrative structure. For this reason, the two modules of which the course is composed run in parallel to provide visual design skills in the field of Information Design, offering knowledge and skills for the research, conception and validation of complex infographic communication artefacts. These skills will be tested within the framework of experimental and project activities through the development of thematic and semester-long project work.

Educational objectives Specific objectives: The course aims to analyze theoretical-critical tools and historical examples concerning the creation of space for the stage, to allow the student to be familiar with contents of various kinds from the performing arts. In particular, different visual, cinematographic, figurative, acoustic, architectural, sociological, anthropological, linguistic, literary examples that are intertwined in the spatialization of the scene and that recur in the new museum will be examined. We will address issues related to scenic writing, border dramaturgy, the adoption of solutions deriving from ritual and eventual models, the theoretical perimeter that contemplates the overcoming of art and aesthetics in the direction of experience, through significant paradigms. Even the contemporary museum, this is the interpretation proposed in the course, makes extensive use of codes and languages of performative derivation in the creation of the space and beyond. A museology, that of the new museum, which will be investigated as a repository of tools and practices related to the scene and its use by the public.
