Literature in the face of the social world

Since the early nineteenth century, literature has been open to the description of a social state made particularly unstable by the French Revolution, and thus acquires a function of knowledge of the real, laying the foundations of a sociological analysis that precedes the birth of sociology itself as a discipline of knowledge. The nineteenth-century novel, from realism to naturalism, constitutes the apex of this analysis of social, in its collective dimension but also individual, bringing particular attention to codes of conduct or social practices that foreshadow what Bourdieu calls the «cultural capital». In the contemporary era, from the 1980s onwards, literature seems to be approaching reality again, confronting society and inventing new literary forms or new ways of writing. Annie Ernaux’s exemplary work is a powerful testimony to this renewed sociological inspiration, linked to a perspective of political and social commitment.
