Module: TEXTUAL PHILOLOGY I A
Ability to read in metrics, translate, analyze from a formal point of view, contextualize from a historical point of view, neo-Latin poetry texts of the 18th century.


Module: TEXTUAL PHILOLOGY I B
The course aims to provide the specific skills to deal with complex philological problems in the context of Italian literature of the first Centuries.

Knowledge of Latin morphology and syntax; knowledge of ancient Latin literature.

The course is aimed at students who already have advanced knowledge of Italian philology and literary history of the first centuries.

Module: TEXTUAL PHILOLOGY I A
The course is intended to be combined with the Neo-Latin literature course, for a total of 12 cfu, organized over two semesters.The course will focus on 18th century Latin lyrics. Since these are unpublished texts that have never been translated into Italian, an active participation of the students will be required; they will also have to become acquainted with the most important Latin poetry meters and their imitations in Italian poetry. Non-attending students will prepare some Latin satires written for the meetings of Arcadia by Leone Strozzi (the search for a treasure in one's own little field; seventeenth century 90s), Contuccio Contucci (on contemporary poetry and the inflation of poets), Giulio Cesare Cordara (against the kabbalists, or the lotto players; 1733) and Giovan Battista Casti (on the disadvantages of small towns; against those who spend the day chatting about war; on his poetry; a Roman feast; 1763-1764). Students who intend to take the 12-credit exam will prepare other texts from the anthology of Latin satires (see bibliography ) or from other editions that may be agreed upon with the teacher.

The course will have a seminar nature and intends to provide students who already possess advanced notions of Italian philology and literary history with the specific skills to deal with complex ecdotical problems in the context of Italian literature of the first Centuries.

The exam will consist of an oral interview of about 45 minutes, in which the student will have to translate two passages (selected by the teacher) from the texts read in the classes, for attending students, or from the satires in the volume “Eja age dic satyram”, for non-attending students, and prove himself able to understand and comment on the vocabulary, the syntax, the metric, the historical and literary issues of the texts.
