At the end of the course the student will have to be able to read and translate properly the texts in the programme. Moreover, he/she will have to be familiar with linguistic, philologic and literary issues related to those texts (point 1). He/she will have to be able to apply independent critical skills when required (point 82) and to express the relevant acquired skills both in writing and orally (point 3). Finally he/she will be able to use all the tools necessary to carry on his/her studies autonomously (bibliographies, databases, etc…) (point 4). Point 1 aims to primarily satisfy the first Dublin descriptor (understand the fundamental themes of the discipline through the use of updated bibliography). Point 2 aims to primarily satisfy the second descriptor (ability to argue and organize knowledge). Point 3 aims to satisfy the recognition and the ability to interpret and use the proposed data, according to the third descriptor. The knowledge provided by the teaching is necessary for the autonomous continuation of studies in the field of philology (descriptor 5). The exam (oral exam) aims to evaluate the student's presentation (descriptor 4).

The course (12 credits divided into two semesters) will start from a question: how the experience of prison, of imprisonment, understood as an experience of constraint and isolation, loss of dignity, violence, becomes, in medieval literature, a central theme that can be declined in very different ways. We will start from the theme of the unjust segregation of which the saints are victims (starting with Saint Legier X century) to then involve the many heroes inmates and victims of an unjust power or cruel enemies. We will then cross the figures of young women locked up in a tower by their jealous husband (a theme that runs through Provençal and French narratives) to then arrive at the theme of the prison of love which in turn can take on different meanings (the prison in which being loved and prison as a metaphor).
