ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION PLANTS Single channel

Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: FABIO MASSIMO GATTA

Objectives

The course is aimed at electrical and non-electrical students and has as its objective the basic training on the major technologies used today for the electricity generation.
The course allows to learn the basic knowledge about the major power generation plants, in particular hydroelectric, fossil fuel steam thermoelectric, combined cycle gas, wind and photovoltaic power plants. The power plant electrical problems related to the electrical machinery, i.e. generators and step-up transformers. its regulation and protection are also covered.

Learning outcomes

Learning about the main power generation technologies: steam and gas thermoelectric (TG and CC), hydroelectric and wind power. Power systems of power plant electrical auxiliary services, types of synchronous generators and power plant transformers and related electrical protections.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of thermodynamics, hydraulics, chemistry, and thermal and hydraulic machines, electrical engineering and electrical systems.

Programme

The generation cost of kWh. Fossil fuels. The fossil fuel steam thermoelectric plants. Gas turbine thermoelectric plants. The combined cycle gas-steam thermoelectric plants- The reservoir and run-of-river hydroelectric plants. The pumped-storage plants. Wind power plants. The supply of power plant electrical auxiliary services. The smooth-pole and salient-pole synchronous generators. The system of electrical protections of the power plant generator-transformer.
