Objectives

At the end of the course the student must know the notions of clinical periodontology, analyzing the
different therapeutic methods, with particular attention to the techniques of
professional hygiene and their influence on the course and prognosis of
treatment, interactions between periodontium and systemic diseases and ai
specific protocols for particular needs in patients with vulnerabilities
health. It also provides basic knowledge on the importance
of nutrition for general health and oral cavity.
At the end of the course the student must be able to distinguish interactions between periodonti and systemic diseases and apply specific occupational hygiene protocols.
In addition, the student must know how to apply anti-tobacco counseling techniques (short intervention), patient motivation techniques to home hygiene, periodic professional checks and a rational diet aimed at protecting oral health.

Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and Understanding
The student must know and understand:
- The phases of periodontal treatment, including non-surgical (e.g., occlusion trauma, chemotherapy) and surgical aspects.
- Gingival, bone resective, regenerative, and mucogingival surgical techniques for gingival recession.
- The correlations between periodontal prosthetics, dental implants, and peri-implantitis, and between periodontal disease and systemic diseases.
- The interaction between nutrition and oral health, with a focus on essential nutrients for oral hard and soft tissues.
2. Applied Knowledge and Understanding The student must be able to apply knowledge and solve problems:
- Apply advanced remineralization protocols.
- Perform tailor-made deplaquing and debridement protocols and operational protocols for fissure sealing.
- Plan personalized interventions based on dietary knowledge to maintain oral health and overall well-being.
- Implement non-surgical periodontal therapy.
3. Making independent judgments. The student must be able to collect and interpret data to make judgments:
- Evaluate and educate the patient on dietary habits to prevent oral and systemic diseases.
- Choose the most appropriate clinical prevention approach (Tailor Made protocols) for the individual patient.
- Assess the clinical implications of the correlations between periodontium, implants, prosthetics, and systemic diseases.
4. Communication skills. The student must be able to communicate information, ideas, and solutions:
(Communication Skills)
- Promote and effectively communicate beneficial dietary habits to the patient.
- Explain the different phases of periodontal treatment to the patient, including surgical options.
5. Learning Ability: The student must have developed the skills necessary to undertake further studies independently:
- Independently integrate dietary knowledge with the clinical practice of a dental hygienist.
- Stay up-to-date on new periodontal surgery techniques and the management of peri-implantitis.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for successfully completing the "Dental Hygiene Sciences II" course (which includes Periodontics II, Dietetic Sciences, and Professional Hygiene II) are the basic knowledge provided by the core courses.
Here are the prerequisites structured by subject area:
1. Fundamentals of Periodontics and Surgery
Periodontology I (Etiopathogenesis): Knowledge of the normal anatomy and histology of the periodontium. Understanding the classification, etiology, and pathogenesis of gingivitis and periodontitis (necessary to understand the advanced stages of periodontal treatment).
Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry: Basic knowledge of dental implants and the principles of dental prosthetics (to address periodontal-prosthetic correlations and peri-implantitis).
Microbiology and Pharmacology: Knowledge of the etiological agents of periodontal infections and the basic principles of chemotherapeutic agents used in the oral cavity.
2. Fundamentals of Clinical Hygiene and Prevention
Professional Hygiene I: Mastery of basic instrumentation techniques (manual and mechanical) and the basic principles of plaque (deplaquing) and tartar (debridement) control to undertake advanced tailor-made protocols and non-surgical periodontal therapy.
Dental Anatomy: Knowledge of the occlusal morphology of teeth (required for fissure sealing protocols).
Oral Physiology: Understanding the mechanisms of demineralization/remineralization of dental tissue to undertake advanced remineralization protocols.
3. Fundamentals of Dietetic and Medical Sciences
Nutritional Science (Basic): Knowledge of the principles of human nutrition, the main nutrients (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals), and their general function in the body (to understand the interaction between diet and oral health).
Systemic Pathology (Basic): Knowledge of some basic systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease) to understand the correlations with periodontal disease and for patient education.

Lessons mode

The lecturer delivers face-to-face teaching in the traditional manner, with audiovisual aids and with lecture scheduling as published on the Course website.

Frequency

Pursuant to Article 5 of the Educational Regulations of the Dental Hygiene Course, the student is required to attend the educational and professional training activities of the Course. Attendance is verified by the teachers through signature/call sheets on updated lists provided by the Teaching Secretariat according to what is established by the Council of the Course, on indication of the Dean's office. The certificate of attendance to the compulsory teaching activities of a teaching course is necessary for the student to take the relative exam.
