Objectives
Upon completion of the course the student must know the information related to the instruments and techniques for professional oral hygiene (probes, curettes and sharpening, scalers, polishing of dental elements) and ergonomics of the dental unit with work positions.
At the completion of the course the student must know how to provide education on the various methods of oral hygiene and on the use of diagnostic tools suitable for highlighting bacterial plaque and dental patina motivating the need for periodic clinical checks
Learning outcomes
Be able to perform oral hygiene procedures, recognize early signs of oral diseases, motivate the patient, collaborate with the healthcare team, and correctly use professional instruments.
Prerequisites
It is important to underline the importance of dental surgeries, provided for by the didactic regulations, which must be considered as pre-clinical activities, preceded by the acquisition of the preparatory contents and only when the student has acquired sufficient pre-clinical capacity and operational autonomy his competences with the treatment of the patient during the traineeship and supervised by the tutor. In each training location a dossier must be filed containing:
the standard programming of internships;
the document with the traineeship objectives;
the specific anti-accident procedure for the student.
Programme
The training program focuses on essential skills in dentistry, including the knowledge and proper use of dental instruments. It covers the processes of disinfection and sterilization of instruments and the dental unit, ensuring safety and hygiene in clinical settings. Special attention is given to the preparation of work materials and the organization of the dental unit, as well as the appropriate use of protective devices for patients and operators. The program also develops effective communication skills between operator, patient, and team, techniques for oral and dietary hygiene education, and practical skills in completing the periodontal chart and record.

Lessons mode
Responsible for planning and organizing the training activity is the Didactic Director in collaboration with the professional tutors of the CdS. These elaborate the annual training project and propose it to the approval of the Course Council. Traineeship supervision is guaranteed by a tutoring system. During the Internship the tutor exercises a constant evaluation of the student's learning in order to achieve the maximum effectiveness of the training process.
The methods that can be used for the learning process are:
- the simulation;
- project work;
- analysis and resolution of cases / problems;
- group work and exercises;
- the role playing.
Frequency
Pursuant to Art. 7 of the Educational Regulations for the Degree Courses of Health Professions (Ministerial Decree 270/04), the Professional Internship represents the fundamental training activity for the development of professional, relational and behavioral skills of diagnostic reasoning and critical thinking. Student attendance at internship activities is 100% compulsory for all 60 credits envisaged by the teaching system in accordance with European legislation and must be certified. The practical internship activity is organized in relation to the academic calendar; the related implementing provisions are the responsibility of the Didactic Director.
Exam mode
To pass the exam it is necessary to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of manual and mechanical instruments, of disinfection and sterilization processes. The student must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of primary and secondary prevention operational protocols.
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must instead demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to connect them in a logical and consistent way.
The exam includes an oral and practical test on synthetic models. The final judgment is also based on the evaluations expressed by the clinical tutors at the end of the individual internship activities as well as the mastery of the topics and the ability to present themselves.
