Educational objectives

A part of the course is aimed at providing students with knowledge about the social brain, scilicet on the neural networks involved in inter-subjectivity, paying special attention to the neuroscientific study of the complex mental processes underlying interpersonal relations. It is expected that the students will be able to learn how to read critically scientific articles in the area of social psychology, cognitive neurosciences, and social neurosciences. The second part of the course is aimed at promoting the acquisition of knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying cognition and at the study of neural substrates of mental processes and the pertaining behavioural manifestations. Moreover, the main investigation techniques within neurosciences, the relations between specific psychological/cognitive functions and the involved neural circuits, and the mutual interactions between cognitive processes underlying health behavior will be analysed.

The course will offer an overview of the most recent results relating to the psychobiological substrate of the main typical and atypical behaviors.
Being an initial course, it will also orient and guide students to a study based on the collection of information directly from the scientific sources, stimulating the critical evaluation of information, and encouraging comparison and integration of acquired information (by thematic lectures, seminars by expert researchers, scientific original articles).

The course aims at providing a basic psychophysiological training for healthy disordered ageing, integrating biological, physiological, cognitive and geriatric perspectives. Moreover, the course aims at stimulating the critical reasoning about psychophysiological methods and techniques and specific for this age and at supporting the dialog across different professionals (like, for instance, psychologists, geriatrics, nurses, etc). The first laboratory will pay particular emphasis on social interactions, prosocial behavior and positive emotions. The second laboratory will pay special enphasis to consciousness, attention and meditation, compassion and self-compassion, and how they may affect emotional states and health. Both laboratories will also offer opportunities to experience protocols and their applications, with particular reference to stress reduction; the management of negative experiences; the management of rumination and brooding, the promotion of well-being.

The course aims to promote the acquisition of the tools necessary for an aware management of the communicative-relational aspects in the relationship between health professionals and between them and the patient. The acquisition of advanced knowledge about the mechanisms underlying individual and social behavior will be promoted as well as a critical reflection on the emotional and ethical implications of the communication of some diagnoses (e.g. diagnosis of chronic or terminal diseases). Finally, the course also aims to promote knowledge and critical reflection about the relational and communicative methods that favor adherence to treatment
