TRANSPORT VEHICLES AND PLANTS Single channel

Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: LUCA RIZZETTO

Lecturers

Objectives

Knowledge of the problems concerning the motion of the ground vehicles, the design of fixed facilities for railway traction (the way an electric traction facilities) and for vehicle maintenance.

The course aims to provide the conceptual basis for the study of the performance of road and railway vehicles and railway systems through the application of the basic principles of physics to simplified functional schemes.
The examination of the main functions of driving, traction, braking and the interactions between vehicle and infrastructure allows you to acquire the ability to apply knowledge to specific cases.
The numerical applications help to provide independent judgment in evaluating the results obtained by adopting simplified functional schemes.
The single topics dealt with in a technical language allow you to acquire communication skills to reliably relate to experts in the sector.
The theoretical and application treatments are set up logically and sequentially to encourage both learning and the ability to apply the analysis techniques to specific cases

Learning outcomes

Provide students with knowledge of the architecture of road and rail vehicles, the laws that govern their running dynamics and the traction systems installed on board. Regarding the railway system, knowledge of the vehicles cannot be separated from that of the infrastructure. Therefore, learners will acquire a basic knowledge of the railway superstructure, signaling systems and fixed installations for electric traction.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, geometry and physics.

Programme

Introduction to the course: adhesion and suspension. Road and railway vehicle design. Ground vehicle dynamics. The railway line and the fixed plants for electric traction. Motion resistances. Energy to motion and locomotion systems for ground vehicles. Endothermic, electric and thermo-electric traction. The mechanic braking for ground vehicles.
