Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the principles of clinical oral examination and the fundamental aspects of oral and dental pathology.
- Describe the main first-level diagnostic imaging techniques, including intraoral and extraoral radiography, and second-level techniques, with particular reference to computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- Understand the main techniques used to perform radiological examinations in the field of oral and dental medicine.
- Recognize the fundamental radiographic features of osteolytic and osteosclerotic lesions of the jaws.
- Acquire basic skills in reading and interpreting oral and dental radiological examinations, correlating imaging findings with the main pathological conditions.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of human anatomy, biology and general principles of pathology, acquired during previous studies.
Programme
1. Clinical oral and dental examination.
2. First-level radiological techniques: intraoral and extraoral radiographic examinations.
3. Second-level imaging techniques: computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
4. Techniques for performing radiographic examinations in oral and dental medicine.
5. Principles of oral and dental pathology.
6. Osteolytic lesions of the jaws: radiographic features.
7. Osteosclerotic lesions of the jaws: radiographic features.
8. Practical sessions on the reading and interpretation of oral and dental radiological examinations.

Lessons mode
The course is delivered through traditional face-to-face teaching, including lectures on clinical oral and dental examination, diagnostic imaging techniques, and the main conditions in oral and dental pathology. Lectures are complemented by practical sessions on reading and interpreting radiological examinations, with particular reference to osteolytic and osteosclerotic lesions of the jaws.
Frequency
Attendance is compulsory, in accordance with the Degree Programme's teaching regulations. Participation in teaching activities is aimed at acquiring theoretical knowledge and basic skills in clinical oral and dental examination, diagnostic imaging techniques, and the reading and interpretation of radiological examinations in oral and dental medicine.
Exam mode
The examination consists of an oral examination aimed at assessing the knowledge acquired in the topics covered during the course. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of the main diagnostic imaging techniques used in oral and dental medicine, their understanding of the fundamental features of oral and dental pathology, and their ability to recognize and interpret the radiographic features of the main lesions of the jaws. Assessment will take into account the accuracy and completeness of the answers, the ability to present information clearly, and the appropriate use of scientific terminology.
Example exam questions
1. What are the main steps of a clinical oral and dental examination?
2. What are the main differences between first-level intraoral and extraoral radiographic techniques?
3. What are the main indications for computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in oral and dental medicine?
4. What are the main radiographic features of osteolytic lesions of the jaws?
5. How can osteolytic lesions be distinguished from osteosclerotic lesions on radiographic images?
6. What key elements should be considered when reading and interpreting an oral and dental radiological examination?
