Module: Management and innovation in the biothecnologies I
1. COMPOSITION OF THE LIVING MATERIAL
Notes on nucleotides, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. The main chemical reactions of biological interest: the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution, the redox reactions. Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure of proteins. Structure of nucleic acids. Visualization of the three-dimensional structure of proteins, the Protein Data Bank. Biological membranes.
2. SYSTEM OF PROTEINS AND ENZYMES
Classification of enzymes and principles of enzymatic kinetics. The model of Michaelis and Menten. Transport proteins: albumin, hemoglobin and myoglobin. Enzymatic cofactors: NAD, FAD, heme group. Ionic channels and ionic pumps: potassium channels. Immunoglobulins and antigen-antibody recognition.
3. METABOLIC PROCESSES
Anabolism and catabolism, the processes of conversion of energy and matter into the biosphere. Glycolysis anaerobia. Cellular respiration and functioning of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Photosynthesis, light phase and Calvin cycle. Fixation of nitrogen in the biosphere, role of nitrogenase.
4. CELLULAR INTEGRATED PROCESSES
Transcription and translation, the mechanism of protein synthesis. Contraction excitation coupling, calcium cycle and muscle contraction. The controlled protein degradation system: the proteasome and the ubiquitin ligases. Signal transduction.
5. PHYSICAL METHODOLOGIES IN THE ANALYSIS OF BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS
Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the interaction between light radiation and biological matter. The model of the optical electron, the model of Franck and Condon and its applications in UV-Vis-IR, fluorescence and Raman absorption spectroscopy. X-ray crystallography in determining the structure of proteins. Rapid kinetic methods for the determination of enzymatic activity.
