KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of the course students will have acquired the basic tools of legal reasoning which includes general notions relating to: legal experience; the role of statute, doctrine and jurisprudence; the system of sources of law and their role in relation to private law; the distinction between private and public law; the notion of subjective rights; different subjective situations recognized in our legal system; the general principles governing the areas of private law which are of interest for social worker (such as individual and family, contracts, liability).

In the Social Work area the role of a Statistics course can be articulated on three objectives: To provide the basic statistical concepts and develop the most useful methods in the social area to allow the social workers to handle data bases in their field of interest; To give the indications for the use of the main statistical sources, also in the social area; To provide keys to understanding the statistical methodology in the research that the student will encounter in his academic and professional curriculum.
Students will be able to organize a data set that is functional to their information needs. They will also be able to formulate research hypotheses to test with quantitative methodology. They will be able to use simple statistical tests.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course will provide, in the first section, an introduction to the sociological theory and concepts in the analysis of society, in an historical perspective. In the second section, the course will introduce the issues regarding methodological procedures of research.
At the end of the course students should know and make critical use of the basic concepts of the sociological discipline, framed in order to the main theoretical currents of reference.
SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED
Students will be able to set and conduct correctly empirical research work, to choose the tools of collecting data in relations to different types of research, providing knowledge on their construction, administration and data analysis.
