Learning Outcomes

The Masters Degree in Environmental and Sustainable Building Engineering based in Rieti aims to train professionals who, thanks to a relevant in-depth and interdisciplinary technical preparation, are able to work as  designers, production and site managers and inspectors in the civil constructions and soil defence sectors, in the waste and environmental resources management sectors, focusing on water resources, identifying issues and problems, analysing their complexity, developing suitable and appropriate solutions, also by developing innovation, management and implementation processes.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the Study Programme achieves these objectives by providing an in-depth knowledge of the subjects already studied during the Bachelors Degree in the fields of mathematical physics, history of architecture and construction techniques, and of the tools and forms for the study and representation of the built and natural environment.

Secondly, the Study Programme allows students to learn the characterizing subjects of environmental and sustainable building engineering, focusing on the following sectors:

technical, construction, structural and installation, of the organization and management of the building process and environmental systems, of safety, of the sustainability of the adjustment, transformation, planning, and possible safeguarding processes of the physical environmental context, of the quality assurance of processes and products, of the restoration of the existing building stock, of the planning and the complex management of the processes and the services connected with environmental and territorial systems.

The characterizing subjects which focus on the practical and professional training of the graduates from the Environmental and Sustainable Building Engineering Programme, are mostly delivered through individual and group teaching activities and provide students with the tools and the ability to analyse complex interdisciplinary issues.

Graduates are therefore able to elaborate and interpret the data of a problem and to manage correctly the interrelation between the different disciplinary fields involved, to select the information and to formulate their independent judgments and identify appropriate design solutions.

The students are able to carry out the above-described because they have developed the necessary skills to analyse  critical issues and provide design solutions to complex problems, integrating the specific scientific knowledge of the construction and environmental sector to their organizational, economic, legal, social and ethical knowledge.

The above-described skills are achieved through the subjects and teaching activities that are provided by the Masters Degree Programme.

Graduates from the Environmental and Sustainable Building Engineering Programme know how to interact effectively with technicians, experts and operators, specialized or non-specialized, who work in the various sectors involved in the modification, protection and enhancement of the territory and of the environment.

They must also be able to communicate clearly through English the chosen technical solutions and the procedures.

To reach this goal, the educational program offers various opportunities, both during normal educational activities and during other activities aimed at developing the students’ communication skills such as discussions, exhibitions, workshops, etc. both individually and in groups, providing students with opportunities to meet external representatives of the job market, local authorities, and to participate in conferences, lectures, guided tours, etc.

The drafting of the Masters degree thesis, which may be of an interdisciplinary nature, and the final discussion represents, together with the grades achieved through all the activities carried out during the entire Study Programme, the basis for the evaluation of the communication skills acquired by the students.

The final examination, in addition to those held during the entire course of studies to do with the various activities that are carried out during the Degree, is the dissertation, an essential opportunity to display the communication skills learnt in relation to the educational themes addressed.

After attending a Programme which is focuses on the rigorous acquisition of specific scientific knowledge and techniques, graduates from the Environmental and Sustainable Building Engineering Programme should possess the means to continue to broaden their technical knowledge independently,, using their ability to intervene in the specific areas which match their expertise.

Students acquire their learning skills through all of the subjects and educational activities of the Masters Degree. These skills are constantly evaluated through all of the exams provided by the Masters Degree Programme.
