Learning Outcomes

The purpose of the Degree Programme is to train construction specialists who are aware of the economic, social and environmental implications of changes made to the territory which define the basis of a sustainable construction concept, in various climate and environmental contexts.

A specialist is one who is aware of the role played by building activities within the framework of protecting and enhancing the environmental characteristics of the territory, one who is concerned about the need for a sustainable approach when implementing changes.  A technician is one who starts from a profound knowledge of the qualities of the territory and its social, financial and environmental characteristics, who focuses first of all on the stock of existing buildings and then applies techniques and materials with reduced environmental impact when making changes.

In addition to basic core subjects and subjects of building engineering, which are integrated with the traditional civil engineering courses, the Degree focuses on environmental sustainability, which is addressed through the courses of the Environmental Engineering Degree, which contributes to the training of building technicians who are aware of the sustainable dimension of the environmental changes it creates.

In this context the main educational objective of this degree programme is to provide students with the skills required for analysing, recognizing, understanding and intervening whilst maintaining awareness of the complex interrelation which exists amongst the many activities of management, design, development, and production and the different operational layers that are at the core of the building industry, meaning the various activities of the transformation of a territory in its physical, morphological, economic, and social aspects, paying particular attention to the impact and the sustainability of the planned technical operations.

In order to train professionals who are capable of acting) consciously and correctly within  the current complex landscape of building and territory modification with a sustainable approach, in various climate and environmental contexts, and therefor in relation to scenarios, which are also international, the degree programme also provides students with the scientific knowledge needed to obtain an appropriate technical and operational training in the fields of Architectural and Environmental Engineering, whose major target is the organization, protection and modification for settlement purposes  of the environment and surrounding spaces in which mankind resides.

In this sense, the Degree in Sustainable Building Engineering caters for a   precise and widespread cultural, social and economic need of an important industry. An industry which requires cutting edge knowledge in science and technology, and the ability to provide appropriate design and management solutions for the many and evident technical interventions in the territory and the environment.

The Degree Programme, divided into terms, is organised so that the different skills and abilities are attained progressively, increasing in complexity over time.

The objective of the first year programme will be the acquisition of basic knowledge and application techniques for scientific-technological training aimed at understanding the built environment and the intervention practices to be made on it.

The second year will cover on the one hand the implementation of core subjects as well as operative technologies in the building field, and on the other hand the basics of engineering subjects.

The last year of the programme will be dedicated to training in sectors specific to Engineering for Sustainable Building, with special attention to the educational fields which apply during interventions both on built and natural environments.

In order to provide the engineer in Sustainable Building with a practical experience of the integration of the multiple applications in which his/her skills can be applied, the career path also includes laboratory activities, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, and the possibility of traineeships opportunities.

The core and professional courses included in the study plan are mainly aimed at developing the students’ practical and operative skills through educational programmes that involve individual and group exercises and activities.

The goal is to provide students with all the intellectual instruments necessary to express their technical proposal independently and autonomously, without external influence.

The academic programmes enable students, through discussions and a problem-solving approach towards actual cases, to develop their judgment and selection skills, to be able to process and interpret the data, to identify and develop technical solutions and operational tools that align with the needs of undertaking technical interventions taking into account environmental sustainability.

Thus, carrying out practical activities, which are occasion for real project elaboration, enables them to acquire the capacity to operate independently.

To ensure that all the educational goals have been achieved, various tests will be held during the study programme.

Graduate students must be able to establish, in the relevant disciplinary fields and at different levels of application, the study of a given problem and describe clearly the analysis carried out, the information acquired, the elaborations made, the synthesis reached and the solutions foreseen, both in terms of methodologies and operative parameters used, and in terms of the related technical aspects. They must also be able to do so when planning possible solutions, arrived at on the basis of their competences.

When practising their profession, graduates must know how to interact effectively with various operators such as specialists in the sector and external operators connected to the sector, who intervene on the territory.

To reach this goal, the educational program offers various opportunities, both during normal educational activities and during other activities aimed at developing the students’ communication skills such as discussions, exhibitions, workshops, etc. both individually and in group, providing students with opportunities to meet external representatives of the job market, local authorities, and to participate in conferences, lectures, guided visits, etc.

The final examination, in addition to those held during the entire course of studies to do with the various activities that are carried out during the Degree, is the dissertation, an essential opportunity to display the communication skills learnt in relation to the educational themes addressed.

The educational programme aims also at developing the competences necessary to be capable of undertaking basic communication through the English language.

Thanks to an educational programme that develops a broad and strong general knowledge of many scientific subjects, and a thorough methodological approach to the development of practical interdisciplinary skills, the student should have the tools to continue to broaden their technical knowledge independently, when dealing with topics which match their expertise, and therefore be eligible for the Masters Degree. The learning abilities which are guaranteed by the knowledge acquired through the core subjects, in the operative methodologies and critical in-depth analysis, guarantee that graduates will continue to learn systematically throughout the whole course of their professional career.
