Attendance

The Masters Degree Programme in Civil Engineering has the specific goal of offering the student an advanced professional training in the field of planning, realization and management of buildings and civil infrastructures, tackling both the problems related to new works and the rehabilitation and recovery of existing buildings.

The educational Programme is intended for graduates who possess a solid background in the basic sciences of physics and mathematics and also a vast basic knowledge of field of civil engineering.

In the first year a common curriculum is provided so as to transmit a coherent body of knowledge and methodologies of civil engineering to the students.

During the second year students deepen their preparation in one of the four traditional and consolidated sectors of Civil Engineering: Geotechnics,  Infrastructures, Hydraulics and Engineering Structures. To complete the study plan, related and complementary subjects provide environmental, legal and technical knowledge and an understanding of the methods, equipment and machinery used in the construction of the works. The student completes the Programme with a project or a research degree thesis.

The possibility of developing individual study plans is provided in order to favour the enrolment of students from different Degrees, that may also belong to different Degree classes, while ensuring the achievement of the learning outcomes of the Masters Degree in Civil Engineering.

The Degree Programme is taught in Italian.

The Study Programme envisions:

a) 48 credits devoted to common educational activities in the distinctive sectors;

b) 30 credits devoted to the specialized study of one of the main sectors;

c) 12 credits devoted to subjects related to similar or supplementary educational activities;

d) 12 credits acquired through educational activities chosen by the student, in line with the educational Programme of Civil Engineering;

e) 1 credit devoted to acquiring further knowledge which may be useful for entering the job market;

f) 17 credits devoted to activities related to the preparation of the final exam to achieve the Study qualification.

The exams consist of written and / or oral tests.

Students may submit an individual Study plan which must respect the regulations of the Study Programme and be approved by the Area Committee.

In table A students may find the activities offered for the recommended curricula, related to the above-described points a), b) and c).

In the table there are: the title of the teaching unit, the scientific disciplinary sector, the number of credits that can be acquired by passing the exam, the type of subject (CR: Regular subject), the learning evaluation system (E: examination with marks in thirtieths, V: “pass/fail” system), the term and year in which the subjects are delivered (1: first semester first year, 2: second semester first year, 3: first semester second year, 4: second semester second year).

Regarding point d), to acquire these credits the student can choose one or more subjects among those provided by the four curricula indicated in Table A (Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Infrastructures, Engineering Structures). In this case, the chosen subjects will be considered in the calculation of the final grade, according to the rules established by the specific regulations.

Rules regarding to the following years and preparatory steps

Students of the Degree Programme must acquire at least 24 credits to enrol into the second year. If they do not do so, students must register to the first year again if they wish to continue their studies.

Study periods abroad

The subjects attended at European or non-European universities, with which the Faculty of Engineering has agreements, projects and / or conventions in operation, are recognized according to the regulations indicated in the agreements.

Students may, after being authorized by the Degree Programme Committee, carry out a period of studies abroad in the framework of the Erasmus Community programs (at universities) and the Erasmus Placement framework (at companies).

Students can also carry out their thesis at universities, laboratories or research centres abroad; in this case, students can take advantage of the “thesis abroad” scholarships offered by the Faculty.

In accordance with the University Educational Regulations regarding studies, exams and academic qualifications obtained abroad, the Degree Programme examines from time to time the study programmes to assign credits in the corresponding scientific disciplinary sectors.

Part-time students

Students enrolling and students already enrolled in the Programme who are simultaneously engaged in other activities may request to benefit from the part-time solution and achieve a lower number of annual credits, instead of the expected 60 credits.

The rules and regulations regarding the part-time solution are indicated in the University Regulations.

For each part-time student, the Area Committee will nominate a tutor who can guide him/her in organizing his/her educational curriculum.

Transfers from other Masters Degrees

Students wishing to transfer to the Masters Degree in Civil Engineering must contact and submit their application to the Students Administrative Affairs Office in P.le Aldo Moro 5.

General information

The Study programme and recommended books can be consulted on the website www.uniroma1.it

Quality Assessment

The Masters Degree Programme, in collaboration with the Faculty, monitors the opinion of the students attending the subjects. The monitoring system is integrated with a quality programme whose responsibility is entrusted to a self-assessment group, composed by teachers, students and staff of the Study Programme. The results of the monitoring and analysis carried out by the self-assessment group are used to implement changes to improve the educational activities.
