Learning outcomes
General Learning Objectives
The Integrated Course in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics aims to provide students with fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge to develop the ability to analyze and address clinical problems in internal medicine and geriatrics.
Students will learn to evaluate the balance between benefits, risks, and costs of clinical decisions in accordance with the principles of evidence-based medicine and nursing care.
The course promotes the development of clinical reasoning and critical thinking in the management of the most common and relevant conditions affecting adult and elderly patients. It also fosters understanding of epidemiological data and its application to health promotion and disease prevention in individuals and communities.
Students will develop the ability to integrate specialized issues into a holistic view of the patient’s overall health and well-being, considering preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, and gender-related aspects.
Specific Learning Objectives
Knowledge and Understanding
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to recognize and analyze the main clinical problems in internal medicine and geriatrics, assess benefits, risks, and costs of care interventions, and understand the principles of evidence-based practice.
They will also acquire theoretical knowledge related to nursing management of patients in medical and geriatric settings.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Students will be able to apply clinical reasoning to analyze and manage the most common and significant medical and geriatric conditions, and to plan and implement nursing care interventions in internal medicine.
They will also learn to promote health and prevent disease in individuals and communities, in accordance with European and national guidelines.
Making Judgements
Students will develop the ability to interpret clinical, functional, and structural changes in a comprehensive manner, integrating multidisciplinary and nursing perspectives. They will be able to place specific health problems within the broader context of the patient’s overall condition, adopting an evidence-based and person-centered approach.
Communication Skills
Students will acquire the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team, using appropriate language and relational skills. They will understand the basic principles of the physician–nurse–patient–family communication model and their role in interprofessional collaboration.
Learning Skills
The course aims to strengthen students’ ability to learn and apply the logic of differential diagnosis and nursing assessment, to develop critical thinking, and to continuously update their knowledge and skills in internal medicine and geriatrics.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have acquired:
Foundational knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology relevant to medical-surgical conditions;
Basic understanding of microbiology, immunology, and hygiene principles related to infection prevention and control;
Knowledge of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation);
Competence in fundamental nursing techniques and patient safety principles;
Communication and relational skills for effective interaction with patients and the healthcare team;
Ability to apply ethical and deontological principles in clinical decision-making.
These prerequisites ensure that students can effectively integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the management of adult patients with medical diseases.

Anatomical overview of the kidney and urinary tract; elements of renal physiology.The nurse–hospitalized patient relationship in the context of renal diseases: assessment of vital signs related to renal function; evaluation of fluid balance; management of abdominal and pelvic drains, and stomas. Nursing diagnosis.Glomerular filtrate, general concept and evaluation of clearance.Basic elements of kidney and urinary tract semeiotics.Oliguria, anuria, polyuria, and dysuric symptoms.
