General Course Objective
The course aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the main pathologies relevant in the surgical field, the different surgical specialties, and their associated therapeutic approaches. It seeks to develop the ability to plan and manage nursing care for patients in the surgical area by identifying fundamental patient needs as well as the main surgical, anesthesiological, and nursing issues. The goal is to ensure the correct application of prescribed diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, promoting targeted and safe interventions that appropriately address the physical, psychological, and relational needs of patients in the perioperative context.

Specific Objectives
Knowledge and Understanding
• Describe the main surgical pathologies and the different surgical specialties, highlighting diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
• Understand the nursing process applied to surgical patients and the related diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
• Plan and implement nursing interventions tailored to the needs of patients in the surgical area.
• Perform care and therapeutic procedures safely, preventing postoperative complications and promoting recovery.
Making Judgment
• Identify the main nursing, surgical, and anesthesiological problems of perioperative patients.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and make clinical decisions based on scientific evidence and ethical principles.
Communication Skills
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, providing clear information and educational support.
• Accurately and professionally document care activities and clinical observations.
Learning Skilss
• Research and integrate scientific evidence and guidelines into nursing practice in the surgical area.
• Reflect critically on professional experience to improve the quality of care and promote continuous skills development.

The students are expected to have a solid foundational knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the main pathologies related to common surgical conditions. Additionally, a thorough understanding of the nursing process—comprising assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and outcome evaluation—is required.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills are also essential, enabling students to interact appropriately with patients and the multidisciplinary healthcare team, in accordance with ethical and professional standards of nursing practice.

Mandatory in-person attendance

The assessment will be conducted through a written examination, aimed at evaluating the student’s theoretical knowledge and ability to apply the nursing process in the surgical area.
The final grade, expressed in thirtieths, will be calculated as the average of the grades obtained in the individual modules that compose the integrated course.
