NURSING INTERNSHIP I Single channel

Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: Flavio Marti

Objectives

This clinical placement course enables students to integrate first-year theoretical knowledge with direct clinical experience, developing fundamental nursing skills, interpersonal abilities, and professional role awareness. Students apply the nursing process under supervision while adhering to principles of safety, professional ethics, and person-centred care.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the clinical placement, students will be able to integrate the theoretical knowledge acquired during the first academic year with supervised clinical practice by applying the nursing process. They will collect and interpret assessment data, identify nursing care needs, contribute to prioritising care, and participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing interventions. Students will progressively develop clinical reasoning, interprofessional collaboration, and therapeutic communication skills while practising according to ethical, legal, professional, and patient safety principles.

Prerequisites

Students must have acquired the knowledge provided by the first-year biomedical sciences and nursing foundation courses, including the nursing process, patient safety, and infection prevention principles. Attendance at the required simulation laboratories and fulfilment of occupational health surveillance and legal requirements for clinical placement are mandatory.

Programme

The clinical placement focuses on the application of the nursing process across different healthcare settings through nursing assessment, identification of care needs, prioritisation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions. Particular emphasis is placed on developing clinical reasoning, therapeutic communication, nursing documentation, prevention of clinical risks and healthcare-associated infections, patient safety, interprofessional collaboration, and professional practice in accordance with ethical, legal, and professional standards.

Lessons mode

Clinical placement takes place in affiliated hospital and community healthcare settings under the supervision of qualified clinical tutors. Learning activities include guided observation, progressively supervised nursing responsibilities, briefing and debriefing sessions, clinical case discussions, reflective practice, and the appropriate use of professional nursing documentation.

Frequency

Attendance is compulsory in accordance with the Degree Programme regulations. Students are required to complete all scheduled clinical placement hours and make up any absences following the procedures established by the Degree Programme.

Exam mode

The Traineeship 1 examination consists of three sequential assessments. The first assessment is a 30-item multiple-choice test. Students must achieve at least 15 correct answers to proceed to the second assessment. The second assessment consists of the presentation and discussion of a nursing record, aimed at evaluating the application of the nursing process. A minimum score of 15/30 is required to access the third assessment. The final assessment consists of the discussion of one or more nursing procedures, evaluating methodological accuracy, technical competence, professional terminology and awareness of the nursing role. The final grade is calculated as follows: multiple-choice test (10%), nursing record (20%), nursing procedure (40%) and clinical placement evaluation (30%). The examination is passed with a minimum score of 18/30.

Example exam questions

Describe the nursing process applied to the presented clinical case.
Formulate a nursing diagnosis based on the collected assessment data.
Explain the purpose, indications, equipment, implementation and documentation of urinary catheterisation.
