Course program
The study of life: Origin of life. Elements of Evolution. Cell theory. Prokaryotes and Eucaryotes: forms, dimensions and structure. Virus. The eukaryotic cell I: Lipids. The plasma membrane: structure and permeability. Membrane proteins. Solute transport. Cell secretion. Phagocytosis and exocytosis. The intracellular membrane system: structures and functions of the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum and of the Golgi apparatus. Lysosomes. The eukaryotic cell II : the Cytoskeleton: microtubules, intermediate filaments and microfilaments; cellular junctions; cellular communication. Structure and function of the Mitochondrion. Genetic information: The structure of DNA; the human genome; the eukaryotic gene; DNA duplication; the expression of the genetic information: transcription of the DNA, maturation of the primary transcripts, the genetic code. Ribosome and translation; fate and post-translational modifications of proteins.
Prerequisites
The candidate must have basic knowledge of the functioning of the living material which will be enriched and developed during the course.
