Learning outcomes
After participating in the seminars, the student will be able to:
Understand the main concepts of clinical microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry applied to nursing practice.
Identify mechanisms of infection transmission, disease pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Connect genetic and biochemical processes to health and patient care management.
Apply scientific knowledge to infection prevention, therapy administration, and early recognition of warning signs.
Develop critical skills in linking basic sciences to everyday nursing practice.
Prerequisites
In order to participate in the ADE sessions, students should have the following:
Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry and human physiology;
Fundamental knowledge of anatomy and the general principles of nursing care.
The ability to understand and interpret scientific texts in the biomedical field.
They should also be motivated to integrate basic scientific knowledge with nursing practice.
Programme
These seminars will cover important topics in clinical microbiology, genetics and biochemistry that are clearly connected to nursing practice. Topics will include how infections start and spread, disease pathogenesis (how diseases develop), antibiotic resistance, and sexually transmitted diseases. The seminars will also cover genes and health and the primary chemical processes in the human body. Nurses will learn how this knowledge can support patient care, for instance by helping to prevent infections, understand illnesses, administer treatments and recognise early warning signs. The goal is to help nurses bridge the gap between science and everyday clinical practice.
Books
There are no required textbooks for this course. Students will be provided with the slides used during the seminars, along with a selection of scientific articles and relevant supplementary materials related to the topics covered, to support individual study and preparation for assessments

Lessons mode
The teacher delivers lectures with traditional or blended methods with power point presentation and scheduling of lessons as reported on GOMP Aure/Orari system, published on the website of CdS.
Frequency
Attendance at the course is mandatory. Participation in lectures is an integral part of the learning process and essential for acquiring the theoretical and methodological knowledge set out in the syllabus.
Exam mode
The attitudinal test will assess the student's ability to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the seminars to simulated or described clinical situations. Critical thinking skills, the ability to recognise relevant clinical signs, make appropriate nursing care decisions and adhere to the ethical and professional principles of nursing will be taken into consideration.
Example exam questions
Seminar sessions do not include a traditional exam. Instead, at the end of each session, students take part in a guided discussion where they can ask questions, clarify any uncertainties and engage in dialogue about the topics covered. This approach aims to promote the integration of scientific knowledge with nursing practice, encouraging a critical and reflective mindset.
