Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
Understand the fundamental mechanisms that lead to cellular death, distinguishing between different types;
Analyze the process of acute inflammation, identifying its causes, clinical characteristics, and cellular and molecular components;
Study chronic inflammation as a pathological process, recognizing its maintenance mechanisms and long-term consequences.
Understand the most common laboratory tests for monitoring inflammation, tracking the course of a chronic disease, or for diagnosing an infection.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of cell biology and biochemistry.
Programme
GENERAL CONCEPTS OF AETIOLOGY.
Concept of health and disease.
Chemical, physical and biological causes of disease.
MECHANISMS OF RESPONSE TO THE CELL DAMAGE.
Cellular adaptations (concepts of hyperplasia, hypertrophy, atrophy, metaplasia and neoplasia).
Damage and cell death: hydropic and fatty degeneration; coagulative and colliquative necrosis; apoptosis.
Molecular markers of tissue damage.
PRINCIPLES OF MICROBIOLOGY
Structural and functional characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Classification of the microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi); Morphology and physiology of bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Microrganism control: disinfection and sterilization.
Vaccines for the prevention of human microbial diseases.
Antimicrobial agents and drug resistance.
PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY AND IMMUNOPATHOLOGY.
Innate immunity and adaptive immunity.
Cells and tissues of the immune system.
Hypersensitivity and autoimmune diseases.
Blood group system.
INFLAMMATION.
Cells of acute inflammatory response. Chemical mediators of inflammation. Systemic outcomes of inflammation.
Monitoring of inflammation: acute phase proteins and VES.
Mechanisms of chronic inflammation, granulomas.
Resolution of inflammation and wound healing.

Lessons mode
The specific topics will be presented in class using PowerPoint presentations or whiteboards.
The primary goal is to convey fundamental and theoretical knowledge.
Frequency
Mandatory
Exam mode
During the oral exam, the student will have to answer questions on the program of each individual module, posed by the teacher.
Example exam questions
Module: PATOLOGIA GENERALE
During the course multiple choice quizzes will be carried out to assess the level of learning achieved.
Typical questions are: What are the principal classes of lymphocytes, and how do they differ in functions?; What are some examples of diseases caused by T cells, and what are their principal clinicopathological manifestations?; What are the major types of hypersensitivity reactions?
Module: PATOLOGIA CLINICA
During the course multiple choice quizzes will be carried out to assess the level of learning achieved.
Typical questions are: What are the differences between necrosis and apoptosis?; What are the main cellular adaptations to stress?; describe the events related to reversible cell damage.
Module: MICROBIOLOGIA E MICROBIOLOGIA CLINICA
