Learning outcomes

At the end of the theoretical and practical lessons, the student will be able to formulate a rehabilitation program based on the level of injury for patients with spinal cord injury and for those with peripheral nervous system lesions.

Prerequisites

Fundamentals of neurology and anatomy of the central and peripheral nervous system

Programme

1. Concept of Unipolar Spinal Unit
2. Medullary lesions: lesion levels in tetraplegia and paraplegia
3. Acute patient positioning, prevention of decubitus, respiratory re-education
and bladder
4. Functional objectives by lesion level: residual motor skills and movement strategies
5. Guidelines and rating scales: ASIA test
6. Evaluation and rehabilitation programme in the short, medium and long term
7. Occupational therapy: general concepts and skills
8. Functional hand in the tetraplegic
9. Transfers and training to ADLs
10. Choice of wheelchair and anti-decubitus cushion
11. Peripheral nerve injuries: framing and evaluation
12. Rehabilitation program for lesions of the nerve trunks of the upper and lower limb of rehabilitation interest: radial, median, ulnar, femoral, SPE and SPI.
13. Polyneuropathies: Guillaume Barrè,
14.VII Cranial Nerve Rehabilitation Program

Lessons mode

Theoretical and practical classroom lectures

Frequency

Mandatory attendance

Exam mode

Written test with open-ended and multiple-choice questions, and a confirmatory oral exam.

Example exam questions

1. Positioning of a tetraplegic patient with a C5-C6 lesion
2. Briefly indicate when it is possible to achieve a functional hand
3. What does the ASIA test assess?
