Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Clinical Question Formulation: Structure well-defined clinical questions using the PICO format (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) for physiotherapy practice.
2. Evidence Search and Selection: Efficiently search, identify, and select the most appropriate and high-quality scientific evidence (such as systematic reviews and randomized clinical trials) using biomedical databases (e.g., PubMed, Cochrane).
3. Critical Appraisal: Critically appraise the internal and external validity, reliability, and clinical applicability of scientific literature, using specific critical appraisal tools for different study designs.
4. Application and Implementation: Integrate the best available scientific evidence with clinical expertise and patient values/preferences to make informed therapeutic decisions (Evidence-Based Practice - EBP).
5. Efficacy Evaluation: Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of adopted rehabilitation interventions based on evidence, contributing to the continuous quality improvement cycle of care.

Prerequisites

The student must possess a solid foundational knowledge of: * Anatomy and Physiology: To understand the biological basis of pathologies and interventions. * Pathology and Medical/Surgical Clinics: To identify relevant clinical conditions. * Fundamentals of Physiotherapy Assessment: To formulate diagnostic and treatment hypotheses. * Basic Medical Statistics: Understanding of concepts such as mean, standard deviation, and basic principles of probability and hypothesis testing.

Programme

Module: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
At the end of the course the student must be able to express some general concepts of computer science, understand the potential that Information Technology can offer in the diagnosis, care and assistance to the patient as well as in the hospital organization; it must also be able to use the most common software applications in clinical practice, in nursing research and in the preparation of the degree thesis.

Aims and methods of statistical analysis; statistical characters and classification
• Statistical sampling and main sampling techniques.
• Data synthesis tools: Absolute, relative, cumulative frequencies; arrangement and organization of data in tables; frequency distributions.
• Main graphic representations: orthograms, circular sector diagrams, histograms, frequency polygons, scatter diagrams.
• Central trend indices: arithmetic mean and its properties, mode and median, tertiles, quartiles and percentiles.
• Variability indices: range, deviance, variance, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. Box-plot.
• Frequency distribution curves. Symmetry indices.
• The Normal Distribution, the standardized normal distribution.
• Elements of Probability. Definition of probability. Calculation of the probabilities of mutually exclusive, independent and conditional events
