Objectives

knowledge relating to the essential morphological characteristics and related modes of functioning of systems, systems and organs in humans and their interactions. Study of the sense organs, the Central and Peripheral Nervous System, the endocrine system, the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory and genital systems. Histological characteristics of tissues: bone, striated muscle and nervous tissue

Learning outcomes

The student must show knowledge of basic histology, structure of organs and systems and functions of organs and systems.

Prerequisites

It is required the knowledge of basic chemistry, biochemistry and physics.

HISTOLOGY
Lining and glandular epithelial tissues (exocrine and endocrine glands). Connective tissues. Muscle tissue. Nervous tissue
ANATOMO-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Overview of neurons and glial cells. Motor and sensory neurons. Anatomy of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions). Membrane potential, concentration gradient, electrical gradient. Action potential. Nerve impulse conduction. Synapses and signal transmission. Myelinated and unmyelinated fibers. Excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. Motor and sensory functions. Receptors. Reflex arc. General somatic sensation. Anatomy and physiology of the eye and ear. Central sensory pathways Motor control: movement and postural regulation. Pyramidal tract and extrapyramidal system structures. Cortical motor and sensory areas. Cerebellum
ANATOMO-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM
Cartilaginous tissue: hyaline, fibrous, and elastic cartilage. Bone tissue. Periosteum and endosteum. Anatomy of the skeletal system. Striated and smooth muscle. Neuromuscular junction. Motor unit. Muscle contraction

Exocrine and endocrine glandular tissue. Anatomy of the endocrine glands: pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and C cells, endocrine pancreas, adrenal glands, gonads, and reproductive system. Hormones. Hypothalamic-pituitary axis

ANATOMO-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
Anatomy of the heart and blood vessels. Systemic and pulmonary circulation. Cardiac tissues: myocardium and connective tissues. Functional properties of cardiac tissues. Electrocardiogram (ECG). Cardiac cycle: systole and diastole. Blood flow through the arterial tree. Venous return to the heart
ANATOMO-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Anatomy of the upper and lower airways. Functions of the respiratory system. Alveolar-capillary barrier. Respiratory mechanics. Gas exchange. Transport of O₂ and CO₂ in the blood. Neural and chemical regulation of respiration
ANATOMO-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE KIDNEY
Anatomy of the kidney and urinary tract. The nephron. Glomerular filtration. Renal clearance. Tubular reabsorption and secretion. Mechanisms of urine concentration
ANATOMO-FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Anatomy of the digestive tract and associated exocrine glands (liver and pancreas). Digestive secretions. Digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Liver functions.
