Objectives
: knowledge of the main causes of disease and the related etiopathogenetic mechanisms. Fundamental pathophysiological mechanisms of the main organ systems and systems. Main human pathogenic microorganisms and host defense mechanisms. Methodology of the main laboratory, chemical-clinical, histological, hematological and microbiological analyses
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
-Understand the main causes of diseases and their related etiopathogenetic mechanisms;
-Comprehend the fundamental pathophysiological mechanisms of the main organs and systems of the human body;
-Identify the major pathogenic microorganisms affecting humans and the host defense mechanisms.

Basic knowledge of cell biology and biochemistry.

Classification of the microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi). Structural and functional characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Bacteria: general organization, morphology and physiology. The bacterial spore. Bacterial pathogenesis: virulence factors and toxins. Fungi: morphology and reproduction. Viruses: structure and composition of viral particle. Replication, assembly and release. Exogenous and endogenous diseases, source and modes of transmission of infection. Microrganism control: disinfection and sterilization. Vaccines for the prevention of human microbial diseases. Antimicrobial agents. Antibiotics and antimicrobial assays. Infectious agents and clinical pictures.
