Module: INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEMS
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. describe the role of informatics, digital technologies and information systems in the
management of biomedical laboratory activities;
2. identify the main stages involved in the acquisition, recording, processing, storage
and transmission of laboratory data;
3. create and organize a simple database in Excel by correctly structuring variables,
observations, coding systems and missing values;
4. use the main Excel tools and functions to sort, filter, check, summarize and
represent data generated through laboratory activities;
5. apply data validation, conditional formatting and basic control tools to improve data
accuracy, completeness and traceability;
6. record, run and describe the functioning of a simple macro designed to automate
repetitive tasks;
7. formulate a research question relevant to biomedical laboratory sciences and
develop a search strategy using keywords, controlled vocabulary, Boolean
operators and filters;
8. use a biomedical database and a citation manager at an introductory level to search
for, organize and cite scientific sources;
9. apply essential principles of privacy, security, professional responsibility and critical
use of artificial intelligence when managing healthcare data.
