Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to develop the skills required to understand the principles underlying the main techniques and protocols developed for diagnostic laboratory medicine. In addition, students will acquire knowledge relating to the role, purposes and new trends in the development of laboratory medicine, the operational logic and general organisation of laboratories, and the characteristics of biochemical, haematological and bacteriological analysers. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to understand laboratory tests for the study of renal, hepatic and haematopoietic system function, clinical enzymology, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, immunohematological diseases, haemostatic and haemocoagulative disorders, as well as specific issues in transfusion medicine, with a view to applying this knowledge in diagnostic techniques.

Prerequisites

In order to understand the course content and achieve the learning objectives, knowledge of human anatomy, pathophysiology and biochemistry is essential.

Lessons mode

The adopted teaching model primarily consists of lectures, utilizing PowerPoint slides as telematic support. To enhance the student active engagement, it will be scheduled also didactic moments inspired by the "flipped classroom" approach. The lesson slides will be posted on the course Google Classroom platform before each lecture, allowing students to review them in advance.

Frequency

To take the exam related to the integrated course, it is necessary to have documented the presence in the classroom of at least 67% of the hours corresponding to the credits assigned to the integrated course. The attendance will be measured by roll call at the beginning of the lesson.

Exam mode

The exam consists of an interview to evaluate the student's knowledge of the topics covered during the course, clarity of exposition, and property of language. To pass the exam, achieving a grade of not less than 18/30 in each module is necessary by demonstrating sufficient knowledge of the course content and expounding the topics enough. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them logically and with appropriate scientific language.

Example exam questions
