Objectives
The course deals with the general aspects related to emergency medicine and the importance of precocity intervention. Will be processed the following points: assessment of vital signs, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS - "basic life support"). Methodical approach and first surgical treatment of critically ill patients.
Learning outcomes
The course addresses general aspects of emergency medicine and the importance of early intervention.
The following topics will be covered:
assessment of vital signs,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS – "basic life support").
Methods of approach and initial treatment of critically ill surgical patients.
Toxicology and Adverse Drug Reactions
Define the risk/benefit ratio
Define the concept of adverse reactions and understand their importance in healthcare, providing simple examples
Discuss the differences between side effects and toxic effects, providing explanatory examples
Discuss the differences between drug allergies and idiosyncrasies, providing explanatory examples
Understand the classification of ADRs according to mechanism and epidemiological classification
Understand what a serious reaction consists of
Therapeutic Drug Monitoring
Define the term "Therapeutic Drug Monitoring" and describe the areas of use of this practice
Distinguish between pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic variability
Describe the requirements for TDM and define the concept of therapeutic range
Explain the rationale for choosing sampling times
Indicate the limitations of TDM based on the different determination techniques
Drugs Acting on the Central Nervous System
Define the mechanism of action, pharmacological effects, and pharmacokinetic characteristics Benzodiazepines.
Define the mechanism of action and pharmacokinetics of antiepileptic drugs.
Outline the mechanism of action of tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs and correlate it with therapeutic and adverse effects.
List the mechanisms of action of the main drugs used to treat psychosis and correlate the associated adverse effects with the drug's mechanism of action.
Outline how morphine and opioid drugs act to relieve spinal cord and brain pain; discuss how their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics may influence their use.
Drugs of Abuse
Explain the mechanisms of action and pharmacological effects of cocaine, amphetamine, MDMA, alcohol, and cannabis.
Understand the meaning of tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, and withdrawal syndrome.
Outline the reward circuit
Medications of the Autonomic Nervous System
Define the autonomic nervous system in its components, describe its anatomy, its functions, and identify its neurotransmitters.
Name the four receptor subtypes of the sympathetic nervous system. For each, indicate the location and probable actions mediated by them on effector tissues.
Describe the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and indications of epinephrine and salbutamol.
Describe the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and indications of alpha- and beta-blockers, demonstrating knowledge of the main differences in their action and specificity.
Medications of the Cardiovascular System:
Outline the normal control mechanisms that regulate blood pressure and define hypertension and identify its consequences.
Describe the mechanism of action of ACE inhibitors and ARBs on the mechanisms that determine blood pressure.
Describe the mechanisms of action and indicate the uses of the three main classes of diuretics.
Define angina and its different types. describe the mechanisms of action of nitrates, beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers and correlate them with the underlying pathology of coronary insufficiency

To understand the course content and achieve the learning objectives, students must have a basic understanding of anatomy and pathophysiology by the start of the course.
Pharmacology
To understand the content of the course and achieve the learning objectives, by the beginning of the teaching activities included in the teaching module, students must possess knowledge of General Pharmacology, the course taught in the first year of the program.

Central Nervous System (CNS) Drugs: Anxiolytics, antiepileptics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, opioids.
Drugs of Abuse: General information on substances of abuse, the reward system, cocaine, amphetamines and MDMA, ethanol, and cannabis.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) Drugs: SNS and PSNS, Sympathomimetics and sympatholytics.
Cardiovascular System (CAR) Drugs: ACE inhibitors, diuretics, nitrates.

Frequency
Pursuant to the Degree Programme Regulations, students are required to attend the academic and professional development activities of the Course. Attendance is verified by instructors through signature/roll-call sheets, based on updated lists provided by the Academic Secretariat as established by the CCL. A certificate of attendance for the mandatory educational activities of a course is required for students to take the relevant exam.
Exam mode
The First Aid exam is an oral exam.
The grade will be the average of the scores from the three different exams.
A positive score on all three exams (>18) will allow the exam to be recorded. Otherwise, the entire exam must be retaken.
