Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide a general framework on the historical development of knowledge and practices of care and assistance, so that students are enabled to read and critically evaluate one or more short texts, indicated by the teacher, concerning the topics developed in the course. The elements of the history of medical ethics aim to stimulate a discussion on the clinical practice that the students will face.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the modules, students will be able to:
• understand the main psychological processes underlying human behavior, with specific focus on cognitive, emotional, and relational dynamics relevant to healthcare practice;
• recognize the nurse’s role, responsibilities, and scope of practice, collaborating effectively with equipe;
• identify and monitor vital signs, applying basic procedures and safety principles;
• understand the historical development of medical knowledge and healing practices, critically evaluating texts related to the history of medicine;
• integrate psychological, nursing, and historical-medical knowledge in patient management and in understanding the healthcare context.
Prerequisites
Students must have basic knowledge of:
• biology, physiology, and relational dynamics;
• anatomy and physiology of the main body systems;
• hygiene, prevention, and safety in healthcare settings;
• general principles of physics and radiation protection;
• chronology and geography of the development of civilizations and global history;
• ability to read and understand complex non-scientific texts.
